Wrong it was around when my grandad was a young kid - and he says its what the spuds called us and we adopted it - the Herd would like to claim many things but no they didnt come up with the term.DB10GOONER wrote:Er... correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding was that the group that broke away from our original hooligans The Herd, called themselves Gooners as in; a crowd of goons, and a play on the word Gunner.
The word then just came into common usage amongst football fans in general when the whole hooligan thing calmed down....?
Ironically i hear some new kids are trying to start up the herd again

I think you misunderstood me there Jim. I don't think the Herd have ever claimed they came up with the name "Gooner". But the lads that broke away from them started using it and that's when it really became well known. This is the version I was told by one of their old boys in the Arsenal Tavern. Maybe true, maybe bullsh*tGoonerJim wrote:Wrong it was around when my grandad was a young kid - and he says its what the spuds called us and we adopted it - the Herd would like to claim many things but no they didnt come up with the term.DB10GOONER wrote:Er... correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding was that the group that broke away from our original hooligans The Herd, called themselves Gooners as in; a crowd of goons, and a play on the word Gunner.

BTW; I've heard about this new crowd of kids trying to start up the herd again. It's pretty pathetic. We really do not want a f*cking firm of idiots to get us barred from Europe, now do we?

I've a good mate that is OB in London and he reckons this attempt to get a firm up and running again dates all the way back to the Galatasaray ruck in Copenhagen.
He used to work Tottenham before he got promoted to detective and he got to know a good few of their (and our) old boys. He also reckons one of the reasons that the OB are so lenient with the local spud scum that congregate outside shite fart lame when we play there is that they are so terrified of another broadwater farm style riot kicking off that they are told to tread lightly by their bosses

but wouldnt that mean i could in theory make a scarf ur shirt and put THE ARSENAL on it and nowt be said,, i wouldnt think so,, the word GOONER is wat thats goin 2 be copyrighted no matter wat you put infront r behind it,, evil clubDicko wrote:The fanzine is called "The Gooner". Perhaps the gooner magazine should try and claim it as their own copyright - after all it has been around long enough to have a genuine claim...
Back to the kids who are trying to start up ther herd again - i hear from a friend that they have set up shop in the pins near Finsbury park station and have forced a lot of real fans out of going to that pub.
