Good debut, shocking red card but lets hold off on the ticker tape parade for now eh ?
Passes the Drogba test? - he'll be lucky, that guy scores against EVERYONE!donaldo wrote:Yes he had a decent game but he wont be playing against a striker like Ngog every week. Will reserve judgement till he passes the Drogba test,Still need to buy a CB
Agreed...our centre backs looked like they could be outjumped each time, and the defending from set-pieces again was a mess.augie wrote:I certainly thought that the guy did ok today but by the same token I feel some of the praise he is receiving is a tad exagerratedYes he matched torres for pace buy that wasnt our area of weakness......defending set pieces and crosses in general are our weak spots and he done fcuk all to remedy either of those today.

That's fair enough Boomer, but in the same way some of the praise for koscielny is a little too much the other way and needs balancing.Boomer wrote:Lets lay of the lad for a bit.
We all agree we need a strong centre back but I doubt we will get one. With Djourou also available (when fit) it means we have 3 centre backs. So the 4th? well I can see that being another Silvestre type signing.
A cheap, experienced old head and one that in his age wouldn't mind not playing/or bench filling.
I thought both Vermaelen & Kos had decent games. Legends like TA were never 'great' from day one. In fact Adams was far from it. But Kos has also needs time to adjust to the league. It's one thing playing pre-season but it's another playing in the league.
Not saying that Kos will be a legend but he needs time.
With regards to the crossing and balls in the box. I think the confidence (or lack off) from the GK is a major thing.
Take the free kick (I think) at the end of the game where Chamack had Kuyt by the throat.
In the box and the main area of marking you had: Verm, Kos & Chamack!
We're having to 'double up' on numbers as you can see the team is not confident of the GK coming for the cross.
Have a decent GK and the defenders don't have to worry about doing the job that the Gk should be doing.
Oh I'm not praising him as such. Just helping to balance the views.marcengels wrote:That's fair enough Boomer, but in the same way some of the praise for koscielny is a little too much the other way and needs balancing.Boomer wrote:Lets lay of the lad for a bit.

There are areas where the keeper cannot come into - and the overall defensive effort by the team is woeful. It seems as someone mentioned in another thread that this area of the team is an afterthought, and is treated as such.
