As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Now i feel we should.
Any ideas??????
To the melody of 'One Dennis Bergkamp':
There's only one Fa-bi-an-ski,
One Fa-bi-an-ski,
He used to be shite,
But now he's al-right,
Walking in a Fabby wonderland.
Fabby, Fabby, Fabby, Fabianski,
Born Is The New King,
Of Highbury!

I'm sorry, but good shot stopping is the absolute minimum standard for a keeper and Flappyhandski has always been pretty good at this. It's is the rest of a keeper's play that sets him apart such as dealing with crosses, installing cofidence in the defence, organising at corners and freekicks and distribution. Now Imust say his distribution at Eastlands was very good, which made a nice change, he still however wasn't the greatest at crosses, I distinctly remember him coming out and punching unconvincingly one one occasion and not claiming another he should have done on another
If he can turn the rest of his game round then great and he is going the right way about it but I still think a few Rory Delap throws will show him up to be the tame mouse that he is and two or three goodish games where he's not been tested on his weaknesses does not a good keeper make
Having been his biggest critic pretty much ever since he first played, I can only congratulate him on a decent performance at Eastlands.
Unlike performances like Partizan away where a huge amount of fuss was made about relatively little, he did actually produce one outstanding save at Citeh and in virtually the first minute too. I thought the save towards the end when he pushed Boateng's effort over was also harder than it looked given the bodies in front of him
However, we shouldn't be fooled by making the regulation stops look spectacular (as was the case at Partizan). His footwork and positional sense is still poor and often he needs to fling himself around to get him out of this problem. The best goalkeepers I have seen in my time following the Gooners - Jennings and Seaman - were rarely spectacular because they didn't need to be. They did the job with a minimum of fuss
But as I said originally - the best performance I can remember Flapper making for the club so far

Not unlike Shay Given who seems to be most peoples idea of a goalkeeping messiah

I see your point - I think he has been the beneficiary of a lack of top quality keepers in this country in the past couple of seasons. In his earlier days in the Prem he would have been top 10 but no more. Another one who likes to make the regulation look spectacular - no coincidence that both he and the Flapper are not as big and imposing as some of their counterparts. However, I would say that's where the comparisons between Given and Flapper end
He did very well with two very good saves that weren't over elaborate. But has he now become the answer to our GK problems? No. Not by a long shot. He has improved with every game so far this season but I won't be calling him the solution to our GK problem unless he can keep it going for a few months yet. I still feel he will fuck up and cost us a major game and/or trophy at some stage...
