when did it become racist to call a black man, black?

i suppose its racist when a mexican calls me 'white guy' too. fuck off all you politically correct morons.

and with ZERO actual EVIDENCE, an 8-GAME suspension. Wow. I have never in my life seen something as unjustified in sports. Wanna know why he got an 8 game ban? Because he's hispanic and Evra plays for United. Watch Terry get no suspension at all, or something meaningless, because he's white and English. Even though there was actual evidence at his racist slurs. Calling someone a nigger is racist, calling someone black is not.

Hi Yankee

I understand some of your sentiments but if Suarez did call Evra a black **** or whatever he called him, then I would say that there are racist undertones, at the very least, because Suarez bought Evra's colour into things. Why would you need to bring the colour of someones skin into an argument? What purpose would that serve? Why not just call someone a **** or whatever term you wanted to use. Once you call something a white this or a black that or a Chinese this or that it is YOU that brings the colour or race into things. Hence why it would appear that Suarez, IF HE DID bring colour into things, has rightfully been found gulity.

I agree with the sentiments, and I also hate the fact that people these days dance around using the term "black" in case it offends people. However, the way it's used is key.

Do you really think there's no difference in saying using black to describe someone, if you don't know their name for example, and if you use it as part of an insult.

If you're going to call someone a *word censored*, why would you put bring their colour into unless it's racist? if you compliment someone would you call them a jolly nice black guy?

Woah, can we all calm down!

Suarez has not been found guilty of making a racist remark. He has been found guilty of using a phrase likely to insult another player.

The FA have right royally coked this up as Evra admitted in his own statement that he insulted Suarez in Spanish.

Percy explained part of why the first line of your comment is pointless.

If a Mexican calls you gringo because he doesn't know you or is being descriptive then fine, if he you piss him off and he calls you a fucking Gringo prick then it's a racial insult. NOT RACIST but a racial insult.

You colour should have nothing whatsoever to do with it.

If you can't tell the difference, then I can't help you.

No evidence?!??- please read the last four pages you might find you missed something otherwise read a paper/news website. The rat face admitted it.

Evra said something in spanish what like puta, or hili poyas chupa mi poyas(apologies to anyone who can read spanish I'm sure it's all spelt wrong) all valid Spanish insults which say nothing about the diver's colour.

If he's brought his colour into question I'm sure Suarez would have counter claimed a racial insult.

Unjustified :? - In any other job he's getting a P45.

BTW if the start of a debate begins with an insult. The power of anything you say goes right out the window, as it would seem you're incapable of having a debate/discussion/whatever without calling us morons for not toeing your 'party-line'.

Suarez has been banned due to an independent panel finding he acted contrary to the laws of the game, which seems fair enough as he admitted it.
Whether 8 games is a suitable punishment is, imo, open to debate.

That Suarez used 'racial' language is proven. But were his words racist? This is the part that is difficult. Without knowing what was going through his mind I guess we'll never know, but 'negrito' is a diminutive which here would be considered more patronising than racist.

However, were his actions racist? I don't think he abused Evra BECAUSE he is black. I suspect he abused him because they were kicking lumps out of each other all afternoon in a heated game between fierce rivals and tempers boiled over. In such circumstances is being called 'negrito' worse than being told to 'suck my dick'?

The word black is not racist in and of itself. However, many people now seem to consider the very use of it racist.
The staff where a friend of mine teaches were instructed to stop calling the blackboard the blackboard as it might offend people. They now write on the chalk board.
I don't believe this is a trivial point because I think it demeans the really important matters of discrimination (at work, socially or wherever it appears).

A friend of mine has very dark skin, two silver front teeth and, when we were younger (in the 70's and 80's) and going out on the town a lot he had a massive afro. We called him Tonk. On many occasions were were challenged as being racist by black and white people. We called him Tonk because it was short for Tonka Toy and he was hard as nails and virtually indestructable.
It had nothing to do with his colour, but many people jumped to conclusions and being told you're racist when your not is very hurtful and difficult to argue (we all then get accused of the ' but I've got black friends' argument).

Actions and the results of those actions are what is important, and discrimination against any creed or colour is wrong, but black is a colour and when used , context and intention are crucial.

Some very good posts on this one. 8)

For me, and I think the law too (?) an insult becomes racist when you qualify the insult with skin colour.

Thus if you call someone a "Stupid dirty cúnt" it's an inult. You call them a "Stupid dirty black cúnt" then it is racist.

Pretty simple I think.

Didn't someone earlier in the thread say that it was like being called "ginge" or "stupid ginger *word censored*"

I found the coverage of the Suarez stuff last night to be disgraceful.

Does anyone in football ever take responsbility for their actions?

Not just that but dogleash also said in an interview that the fa should start making more of an effort to control fans after some wigan fans gave the cheating *word censored* some stick last night - for anybody else to make that statement is ridiculous enough but for the manager of a club like liverpool who has an appaling history of their fans misbehaving is absolutely shocking  What sort of a game does he want to have in the future ? The atmosphere at matches is shit enough as it is and now he wants fans to sit silently for 90 minutes ? Fcuk off dogleash you bottling *word censored*.....as soon as things get tough you will walk just as you did in 1991 so the behaviour of the fans wont concern you then anyway
