Womens World Cup 2015

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

I watched 1 or 2 Conference games last season, and as shit as it was it was still vastly more technically advanced than anything played by women.
I have watched a few games in the ladeez world cup and though I will concede than the standard has improved in terms of fitness and ability over the past 10 years you would have to go way down the pyramid system before you could find an equivalent mens level.
My old clubs youth side played Bristol Academy's strongest side in preseason friendlies a few seasons ago and this bunch of decent 16 year olds (predominantly) thumped them something like 7-0 then 4-0 the next year.

I've actually been to see a WSL game and it is absolute fucking toilet. Conference sides would be sticking 15 on the best women's sides - and it's not just to do with physicality. Technically they are so far behind and the game is played at such a slow pace. Drives me insane when I hear people who have never watched it properly declare that the WSL sides must surely be about League 1 / League 2 standard.
Similarly a good few years back I got asked to play in a supporters' match for my mates' non-league side. The oppo had some supposed 16 year old whizz kid England ladies player out on the wing. Our aging left back, who once played two seasons for Maidstone United and a season at Bromley but now spends most of the season between the chip shop and the pub, didn't give her a kick.

I played a friendly against Maidstone united many moons ago (approx. 22 years ago  ) and their dirty b*stard centre forward broke my nose intentionally with his elbow  Next ball put down the line I went out and tried to scissor kick him in half.....I failed but the effort and thought were there 8)

Tbh there are people where their comments are just a case of pure chauvinism, agreed.

But it's not just detractors of men's football who draw comparisons - high profile figures within women's football and many fans thereof are constantly drawing comparisons, whether it be between the standard or demanding equality in facilities, coverage, funding etc. And it can feel slightly like women's football is being shoved down your throat at times - I remember a few months ago you were almost in disbelief that I wouldn't support Arsenal women's team in the same way as the men's team - so of course people are going to draw comparisons with the men's game given that.

It's a valid point that they're never going to be as good as men but do you honestly believe it's of no consequence that the standard is utterly appalling?

Last night's England Mexico game was laughably poor. Every pass was either hopeful or hospital and most goal attempts were nearer the corner flag than the goal. I'm surprised that there weren't more attempts from the halfway line; the keepers don't stop much.

After watching last 15 mins of the England game I would say the quality of the women's game has deteriorated in the last 5 years.

I saw the first half of last nights game and I actually enjoyed it!

It's fair to say that technically they're not as good as the men but there was some good one touch football played at times.

I particularly enjoyed the bit where the England goalkeeper totally poleaxed the Columbian striker with an arm across the throat. It reminded me of football in the 1970's :barscarf:

It was a HE, Jonathon Pearce I think... My God I would imagine he had to change gear after the game.

The journalist suggests that sport is not about quality, but about the contest, but overlooks the fact that the best sports spectacles are contests involving the highest quality.

If you're playing sport then it should be about the contest, which is why players turn up every weekend in the Medway 8th division, but I'm not interested in it, don't want to watch it and certainly wouldn't put it on TV.

I've tuned in to bits of the England matches and the quality is so poor that it's completely devoid of interest.

I will look into sponsoring you, my dwarfy little friend, but I too am very careful about giving card/bank details online.

Especially after that animal porn site robbed me. :banghead:
