THE WENGER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

To be fair augie if they did the same with the other top teams corresponding results I'm sure there would also be differences, so I'm not sure how much relevance the comparison actually has - especially in this of all seasons. :rubchin:

It does truly amaze me though (and I don't want to start steve o off on another rant here  ) how many Gooners are in a constant orgasmic state at how we are currently doing and are in favour of wenker signing a new deal  If our form and results continues like this until xmas then maybe I could understand it (but not agree with it) but to go ott this early and after the easy run of fixtures we have had, is mad imo
It's a bollocks argument that ignores form, injuries, suspensions, etc. Every game is different. For example, we drew at home against Sunderland last season. If we were to play Sunderland at home now in the form the respective teams are in, you'd be a brave man to back Sunderland to hold us to a draw.

Whilst I am yet to be convinced this side can win anything, I do agree that this argument about last year's points at this stage compared to this year's points is fucking ludicrous. It's a quantative stats based argument and as 1989 points out the argument doesn't take into account qualitive criteria like form, injuries, suspensions. For this stupid argument to even begin to make any sense we'd have to play the same teams at the same time of year, with the same players, under the same weather conditions, with the same officials - and still that wouldn't take into account FORM, both individual and squad wide!

I really could not be arsed to check this, but I wonder if we looked at the first 10 games of the 1996-97 season and compared them with the first 10 games of the 1997-98 season (or compared 03 with 04) what would we get? I'll tell you - absolute bollocks, like all stats.

It's his birthday today and 64 must be a good age to opt for the pension, mustn't it?

Pensionable age keeps going up and up actually, it'll be 80 by the time you get there

Seriously, wonder which Wenger will turn up this season, given the way we are playing - the old Wenger, who assumed tactics and studying the opposition were unnecessary as his team were so good that we just had to go out and play our game; or the Wenger of last season, who seemed finally to realise that he had some pretty ordinary players so had better adapt tactically to each opponent.
Wonder if he'll have made plans for Lewandowski and Reus tonight, or just hope the magic keeps flowing?
I"m reading Philippe Auclair's biography of TH14 and he says he was astonished that Wenger paid cursory attention to Barcelona the evening before the Final itself and not before. Cesc also stated that Guardiola did intense studies of Barcelona's opponents, which never happened at Arsenal.

PS the natural state of the older Arsenal fan is quiet pessimism and neuroticism, which makes the pleasure of days like saturday all the greater. Not grumpy, just rational!
Happy Birthday I hope to Arsene the Alsatian :D :barscarf:

Didn't hear any "There's Only One..." chants tonight. Funny that - the usual half emptied bowl after another CL defeat against the first genuine CL challengers faced

I'm very superstitious and our bad result coincided (as in previous years) with the re-emergence of Wenger's new oversized coat. Seen enough to hope that Klopp is our new manager whenever that happens. Wenger's said he'll decide mid season apparently.

Ha ha! Was about to type something very similar. Klopp would be far and away my choice to replace Wenger but I doubt it will happen, sadly.

Agreed, 4th by Christmas when all of the lobotomy cases of the first two months of this season will suddenly remember that having a top class striker wasn't addressed over a whole 3 month Summer that saw all the other big teams change manager

We narrowly lost to one of the best teams in Europe and already Wenger's getting criticised  . Can't wait until we play United and Liverpool, think we'll do better than a lot of people are predicting.
