the idea Verminator's positioning has been coached out of him by Wenger
is, in my opinion, idiotic.

So pray tell, what part of Wenger's coaching is actually good? All I can see is over passing, for over passing sake, no width, overpack the middle, the attempt of threading of the ball through a packed opposition's packed middle, we are so easy to play against it's funny!

You haven't come back on the points of the corners, the free kicks either, both of these important arts are severly lacking. I just can't see what Wenger brings to our club anymore!

He didn't have a clue about positioning in the first place.

Rumour has it, when signing his contract extension, he stood with is back to the contract and ran at the wall. :?

Some players have not improved enough under Wenger
the very best flourish. Suggesting he makes every player worse is ridiculous.

Who... Kos.. The Ox has regressed, Wally Walcott is only slightly better now than when he has 17, he still can't control or cross a ball, free kicks shit, corners crap... How about our free kicks and corners do you reckon they even practice them?

Who has flourished in recent times?

Overall defending of the team is ropey, GK's dodgy and Strikers can't hit a cow's arse.

Wenger only concentrates on attacking midfielders and ends up playing most out of position because he can't fit them all in.

Koscielny has improved since he first came to Arsenal, Gibbs has improved despite the injuries, Ramsey has improved from a very low ebb post-injury under Wenger. Ummmmm.... Jenkinson? Certainly seems a better player now then his record at Charlton suggested, imo he was very unlucky to get dropped for Sagna. That's all I can really think of from the current bunch. You could say Walcott has added more end product but bizzarely it seems to have coincided with him becoming lazy as fuck.

The biggest coaching success of his Arsenal mk 2 reign was van judas  :banghead:

Yup, he's basically saying he doesn't believe coaching has any influence on a professional footballers career.
I'm saying the idea that everything positive being down to players
but everything negative being down to coaching
is fecking retarded
That's true, but I do wonder if we coach certain attributes out of players (like shooting from distance and defensive discipline). Not intentionally, but perhaps by way of starving them of the opportunity to practice/develop these skills by focussing on other areas during training, such as one touch football and 5-a-side games (as a crude example).

Just a theory.

Of course, that theory also assumes our players improve in other areas of their game where Arsenal thrive, like passing sideways and stuff like that :D
I think g88ner has touched on it here.

JD - it's not that certain skills are coached out of players by Wenger as such, but rather that Wenger's coaching regime doesn't allow these players to practice those skills (set pieces, corners, free kicks) and they get rusty through this lack of practice. Most football skills are partly muscle memory, you need to practice them over and over so they become second nature and almost subconcious. Thus you had Wrighty staying back with the keeper for an hour or two after training just firing shot after shot at him for example, similarly Bergkamp - and famously Zola hanging a dartboard in the top corner of the goal and hitting it time after time.

I always got the impression that certain elements of the Ingerlish game offended Arsene's purist sensibilities tbh. Things like set pieces and corners are too old skill, too rough and tumble, and not part of his vision of the beautiful game, and thus we do not do them very well. So instead of practicing these skills like set pieces and corners, and getting disciplined at them, Arsene has them working on first touch and passing.

We were the first team to start making almost every free kick (that was more than 25 yards out) become a quick roll of the ball 5 yards sideways to get the passing going again rather than going for a set piece every time like most teams did at the time.

okay, now i've stopped giggling i'll give you the straight answer - other, less expressive clubs, lob high balls into the box for the keeper and back four, they practice defending free kicks, break aways, early crosses, crosses to the back of the box, defending a high line....

all to build up second nature and muscle memory.

but do we do this in training. non. we poo poo such trivialities. OUR back four focus on sprints and possession, first touch and control in limited 2 v 2's or 3 v 3's....

that way our back four and keeper are free to express themselves and be the artistes and launchpads for stunning rapier like attacking moves... against our lesser gifted but probably prepared and organised opponents.

have you ever seen training on Members Days ? - you know they run around for an hour then move around little squares around the pitch for the next hour before a jog to the showers ? that's not for the fans, that is really how we train :banghead:

back in the day, we then used to go and get a kicking at barnet or stevenage followed by johnny foreigner trying to break our legs which would be perfect preparation for the blood, guts and thunder of the EPL, which despite its high pace and not a little skill, is still the most physical league in the World.

that would prepare us for the first game and to put some flash c.unt from some skanky poohole 4 rows back after his first touch - any of le saux, klinsmann, mcmamananaman, pennant, bentley, even Tony Daley, can be inserted here.

but alas after six weeks of total non contact in training (remember when they used to let the reserves and apprentices at them ????), our pampered babies are given a five star guided tour of the far east now, to sell a few shirts and play exhibition games against opposition who are warned under no circumstances to ever actually touch one of our darling boys.

even then, some, if not many, will crumble at the first attempt to run at match speed and compete for the ball...

that my unlearned friend is the current pitiful state of our training and preparation methodology - in short, unbelievable belief PLUS super quality, always wins.
