RIP Thread

It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

But whilst I am sorry for people losing their jobs, HMV was always going to decline once Amazon and others started to rise.
The writing was on the wall as soon as broadband connections became widespread.

HMV fought dirty, they had no qualms about stocking bootleg merchandise which provided no sales or royalty income to the artists featured.
That is theft if you ask me.
But HMV would threaten the artists with not stocking legitimate items of theirs if the artists sued for stocking the bootlegs!

Their decline is a natural progression from high street to internet, mixed with a bit of karma.
HMV as a company might have been shits but over 4,000 people are going to be out of work soon and if thats ever happened to you (as it has with me in the past) its a shit feeling. I feel for them if not the comapny
Except for the absolute arseholes "working" in the Dublin branches (see my rant above). They are basically being paid for not working as it is! Being on the dole would give them more time to do nothing and still get paid. :x
For every useless fucker there is probably 10 or 20 good hard working people, shame for them
Not in the Dublin branches, mate.

Blimey   can we at least agree that it's sad Jessops has gone? :( - as a photographer yourself DB, surely even you can sympathise? - or is the Dublin branch worthy of a rant as well?

I will grant you that Jessops is sad. And indeed the Engerlish branches of HMV going blammo is sad too. Just not the Dublin branches which are staffed by - ah, see rant above.

I am sorry for the job losses.

But the writing was on the wall for HMV for the last decade.

HMV staff in London's Oxford Street store (The one near Oxford Circus, cannot speak much for the one near Bond Street one as hardly went in there) were good on the whole, certainly people in the specialist sections knew their stuff.

Jessops is a sad loss, genuinely helpful and knowledgeable staff.

They've ceased trading on the web. I hope the shops are still open, as they did seem hopeful they could still continue trading. I was speaking to the manager in my local hmv on sunday and he said he wasn't aware of branch closing, despite local rumours. It's proper shit being made redundant. Somehow I think their trading model went a bit wrong when cd's became cheaper online than in the shops. Discouraging people to go in their shops.

Next up Morrisons will be closing a chunk of its superstores.

Went into HMV in Dublin after work yesterday to buy an iTunes card for my daughter and a couple of people were asking why they (HMV) would now not honour their gift vouchers. The attitude of the staff? Basically, "Meh, not my problem."

Honestly, these lazy unhelpful crunts in the Dublin branches fucking DESERVE to lose their jobs.

But I do feel genuinely sorry for any decent hard working person that has lost their job. Must be a sickening kick in the guts. :|

Good story on Irish Indo today about the Grandad who had bought his grandson a voucher for Christmas. Went to HMV Henry Street branch yesterday , picked out a few items and once they were boxed up for him he handed in vouchers. Staff refused them so he walked out with the items. Security followed him but after a while gave up, It's not robbery as he had paid up front.

A good/positive thing that might come from the closure of HMV is that the small indie record shops - who are always (at least the ones I've been in) Incredibly knowledgeable about all styles/genres of music and always extremely helpful, might get any of the business that the big chains were getting.
