The Mesut Özil Thread

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Why let the truth get in the way of a story?

Wouldn't be surprised if "illness" was caused by the half time shirt swap.
I agree with quartz would love to see Ozil with Sanchez and Walcott either side.

Ozil says he believes he can win the Ballon D'or in the next few years....

he must be planning to leave us, cos no way will he get close to it under wonga.

He really has become a delusional twat. I have my if doubts if he'll ever be player of season for any club he plays for let alone win the fucking Ballon D'Or.

"It seems to me that, no matter how well Özil plays, the complaints persist. So what’s the problem? Is he too languid, too casual? This seems an odd gripe for Arsenal fans considering how we all go weak at the knees at the very mention of Robert Pirès’ blasé footballing cool. Likewise, I’m not sure Özil actually is that casual; on Saturday’s Match of the Day, as Alan Shearer highlighted the various facets of our defensive work, there was considerable focus on Özil’s commitment to pressing, tracking back and tackling when we were without the ball".

Taken from an article on the homepage. How can anyone in their right mind compare Ozil with Bobby.

A few things I would say to this. Firstly put both players in the box with clear sight of goal, the ball on their weaker foot who would shoot and who would pass? Who has a better goals to games ratio and quite often chips in with 15 plus goals a season. Shearer mentioned Ozil pressing, well I am sorry he is one of the laziest players in the team and the two examples shown are the exception not the rule.

Don't get me wrong, I think Mesut has the ability to be as effective as Bobby was, just he is only giving us 80% of his true ability which is quite frankly an insult to Arsenal and the fans.

I think he is comparing languid styles not Bobbys style of play to be fair, Berbatoss is another languid style player, all 3 have different styles of play.

Agree it drives us all nuts when Ozil does these passes across goal rather than shoot- but dont you remember his penalty attempt last season v Marseille.... , he just seems to have a weak direct one on one shot. His passing and running make up for it though. Sometimes I think that unless a player can run fast with the ball and shoot powerfully then fans just dont take to the player- Giroud springs to mind, his shot left footed from the edge of box is great but you wont catch him running with the ball- its not his style.

Since Ozils come back Ive been more impressed with his work rate- we know he had personal problems with his Dad etc which may explain some of his attitude last year. We all know what he is capable of, he ran the game for Germany in the WC in 2010, yet even for them in last years WC despite being a near ever present didnt seem to be the same- suggesting perhaps his mind wasnt 100% there.

Stats show he runs and runs, and provides assist after assist- he is useful to us in the right position, and needs more time to proove himself. If he provides 25 goals from his assists a season thats a much better end return than 15 goals alone.

I have no qualms about that article and the use of Ozil as the 10.

Of course he should be in the number 10 role and thousands of Gooners have been saying that since we signed him, but of course le cock disagreed  Of course it doesnt really matter who plays the number 10 role if your main striker is either giroud, wellbeck or wally :(

I think that Özil at 10 and Wally up front would be fairly a potent combination. Giroud? Not so much.

Our local under 15 side has a strike force with more strength and presence than that strike force
Tbh, and it pains me to say this, but I would rather have wellbeck as our lone striker than wally
