Pretty amateurish from manure and Moyes to not knowing what they were getting into.northbank123 wrote:From what I've read was a bit of a farce as release clause had to be activated by paying it himself and this would have incurred a further 5m or so in tax. Anyway it's a farce that the champions who should have been bringing in the one or two players they needed early doors instead ended up desperately going in for the player they were always going to and paying £4m more than they could have signed him for before pre-season.

i agree, and the real problem will be what happens if he breaks his leg for Germany this week.....SteveO 35 wrote:

The problem I think we have now is ensuring we keep an ambitious player who has played at a top club winning trophies for the long term.

we'd be back to square one - with just a little bit more DM cover, no cover at CB and only Walcott to cover for Hey Giroud until Pod's back, unless anyone will actually believe the King of Denmark will make the bench.
i would have rather seen the 100m go on three 25-30m quality reinforcements through the spine of the team.
its a big gamble putting your faith on the health and form of one superstar. a big risk in my book and i'm not letting wanger and Ivan off for a minute. that was a lousy transfer window and we were crap at it and still are.
btw Bale will be at Liverpool within two years mark my words.

I read an article citing quotes from a Spanish journalist saying that Bilbao were very underhanded but ultimately leave your business down to the last few hours and you're taking a huge gamble. No excuse for United of all clubs to be left scrabbling round on Deadling Day.Rohan wrote:Pretty amateurish from manure and Moyes to not knowing what they were getting into.northbank123 wrote:From what I've read was a bit of a farce as release clause had to be activated by paying it himself and this would have incurred a further 5m or so in tax. Moyes clearly wanted to sign Fellaini all along - he should have just tied him up for 23m at the start of July, bombed out one or two of their squad players and then he would have been perfectly positioned to act if another quality central midfielder became available (with the option to get rid of Cleverly, Kagawa or others to help fund it).
Tbh whilst they often lack creativity I can't see that their system is particularly conducive to a playmaker in the sense that a lot of people mean that term given their lack of dynamism otherwise in central midfield (with the likes of Anderson, Giggs, Carrick, Cleverly), especially if you're also trying to crowbar Rooney into the same side.

Re: SUMMER TRANSFERS - Your thoughts on who did and did not
Kinda ironic that the C word was banned cos of a fear of an almighty backlash at the end of the transfer window but then the forum goes down for almost 24 hours anyway so the sting would have gone out of everything by then
For the record, arsole wenker is still a C - this was a shockingly poor transfer window yet again and we are still nowhere next nigh or near winning a trophy again
We went into the transfer window with a £70m transfer fund, raked in 12m+ on sales and still only spent half of our transfer kitty despite a desperate need for a top quality DM and top quality striker
When it comes to comparing quality, fellaini isn't anywhere near ozil's class but had we signed the Belgian he would at least filled an existing need. When you actually analyse things clearly, everton had a better transfer window than us and for a club with very limited funds, that is shocking
I really, really fear that this one transfer will set the seal on arsole's new contract - people on here, that I would normally class as intelligent and level headed, have fallen into this euphoria over signing ozil and seem to have completely forgotten about the negligence shown in every other aspect of our transfer business
All that being said, ozil is a fantastic player and has very few equals (in his position) in world football
If his signing was the start of a major change in the way the club is being run then his signing could prove monumental for the future of our club. For the here and now though, that policy change is nothing more than hope cos 1 signing on it's own does not equate of club policy.

Re: SUMMER TRANSFERS - Your thoughts on who did and did not
I think we needed:
Good backup goalkeeper
Centre Back/Right back
Tackling dynamic midfielder
Striker
We got two of those.
And a very good player in a position where we were well stocked.
Very happy to see Ozil at the club, am OK with Flamini, a WYSIWYG player.
But an injury to Giroud sees us pick from -
Podolski - injured, not proven as Premiership striker.
Walcott - best at right wing, not proven up front.
Bendtner - not as bad as is perceived, a 12 - 15 goal per season man, but how motivated will he be?
Sanogo - far from ready, if ever.
Akpom - brighter than Sanogo, but just 17.
Afobe - injured, unproven.
Park - last seen working as a waiter in the Busan restaurant.
As for centre back, we are fine only as long as we get no more injuries.
But if Sagna is needed there, it means we have the average Jenkinson right back.
I would have liked to have seen David Villa and the new Liverpool player Mamadou Sakho signed too.
As it stands we are fighting for third place.
As a fan who pays a lot of money for tickets, that is not acceptable.

Re: SUMMER TRANSFERS - Your thoughts on who did and did not
We spent all summer chasing a top quality striker and ended up with none. Gross and utter incompetence by the manager as per usual. Hopefully use this season for Ozil to get right up to speed with the prem and then go at it all guns blazing next season with 3 marquee signings and Jurgen Klopp at the helm. The future's bright without Le Turnip

If Sahko was available (which he obviously was) then why the hell wre we not in there like a shot ?
Seemed ideal for what we were in need of ?
