Poppies on the England Shirts

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Massive supporter and believer in the poppy appeal.

But the fact the week has been spent banging on about wearing them in one match shows how fucking tedious international football really is, not even the media can be bothered talking about it.

See Reddknapp had to stick his Oar in again, is there any issue that collapsed-faced twat wont comment on?

A sensible compromise is reached, which could have been done quietly, behind closed doors and everybody (nearly) would have been happy. Instead the FA tramps in all guns blazing. A poor spectacle all round.

Still, as Cesc is banging the 4th goal in Fabio can blame the poppy debacle for a lack of focus.

Now, what was that thing to do with John Terry again......

not been here properly for ages but this seemed like an appropriate thread to comment on - because, as was always the tradition, I disagree with everyone and what I say will probably irritate people:
F*ck poppies

I will no longer wear a poppy. I'm against them.
In America they have a flag day (flag week?) and, just like in England, if somebody on telly forgets to wear one the media spaks out. America has something else rather important in common with England
- no not the huge illegal pillaging based empires built on the backs of their soldiers,
- no not the bizarre obsession with being the worlds policeman
- no not the fact our foriegn policy is often based on corporate interests

I was thinking about the fact that in both countries between 35-50% (depending on whether you believe govts or charities) of the homeless are ex-services. Ex-prisoners get a parole officer as a 'right' yet ex-soldiers have to go cap in hand to the British Legion - bollox.

If our politicians get a hard-on for 'projecting power' abroad then, when budgeting their next escapade, they need to factor in supporting the survivors of those they send to fight, die and kill FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.

Politicians post govt 'after care' is not provided by charities,
charities don't fund raise for civil servants after they retire.

Soldiers should not have to humiliate themselves by asking for charity.

the British Legion should spend the money they raise on campaigning for Govt support for ex servicemen (and women) as A RIGHT
they should publicise the thousands of soldiers who die alone with physical and mental health issues homeless or in terrible accommodation

This would massively reduce the MODs capacity to wage more wars
good

I can't agree with you posting this. I wear a poppy as a sign of respect for those who died for their country.
I don't agree with how ex-servicemen are treated by the government. Also a lot of ex-servicemen do not agree with how they are treated by the government. Yet I am yet to meet an ex-servicemen who does not wear a poppy - let alone share your "fuck poppies" view.

All of the poppy talk has overshadowed the even greater issue..............how the fuck do Stewart Downing and Glen Johnson get anywhere near an England team?

Downing is genuinely one of the worst players in the last 25 years to wear an Emgland shirt FFS!! He makes Diaby look like Messi on top form!

Theo Walcott- fuckinbg raped their shitty left back, unlucky to be brought off, I still think he needs to become a striker but this was the most mature, impressive, hard working performance i've seen from him for england since he fucked croatia single handedly
Ashley Cole- what can you say, the boy is fucking mint and i actually love him
Scott Parker- immense performance, that challenge near the end, fucking class, top fucking lad
James Milner- worked his fucking balls off, good delivery for the goal
Glen Johnson- decent performance, quite solid, done well
Adam Johnson- didnt get long on but looked direct and worked hard
Danny Welbeck- fucking mint, i love this man, 10x the striker bent is, linked play, brought it down on his chest, kept possession for us, ran his heart out
Gabby Agbonlahor- unlucky to miss out with injury
Joleon Lescott- fucking immense in defence, class performance, read everything, cut things out, fucking spain couldnt fucking touch this boy, watching their strikers with him was like going shopping with fucking mc hammer, couldnt fucking touch anything

Proud as fuck of all our players, but these boys above, fucking even prouder, proud as fuck, fucking class lads, good boys, talented footballers, fucking pride of England, the fucking lot of them

I know Parker was announced as the MOTM but Lescott was the best England player for me, he was top notch today.

Roll on the Euro's! :barscarf:

 I was rather gushing in my praise of him I notice! TBH I think I put it on one of the "things you shouldnt admit to" threads, but I do actually love Ashley. I'm a Sunderland fan first and foremost but I support England almost as much and for years Ashley has been absolutely quality for us. Some of the abuse hes had would have made a lesser man think "fuck this" and quit international football, but hes kept on turning up, kept on performing and has been one of the few (about the only one) of the "golden generation" to really warrant the title.

Obviously hes not popular on here, and thats certainly understandable, but for England he's been class and deserved his player of the season award last year (which seemed to mean a lot to him). He's had his bad moments in the press, and he doesnt seem like the kind of person I'd particularly like to meet, but then very few of Premier League players do seem like particularly nice lads, they've all had too much money for too long and developed an overinflated sense of self importance. Despite this though, Ashley hasnt done much wrong other than be a bit of a tit at times- hes certainly no Marlon King or Joey Barton. Wearing the poppy on his boots was just a class touch from a lad who, in a purely footballing sense, has been class throughout his career.

Like I say, he's hated on here and by Arsenal fans in general and thats fair enough, if hed done to SAFC what he did to Arsenal I'd hate him as well, but personally I love the lad, brilliant footballer, always proud to play for his country, very rarely missed games (whilst many of the big 4 players end up "injured" for friendlies), good performer. Probably a bit of a prick on a night out but, well, I wont be having any nights out with him so that doesnt concern me too much!
