Gentlemen, it is what it is. We have signed Danny Welbeck. The way some of you are going on you'd think we'd signed Danny La Rue.
I for one am pleased we're not spending £300k per week on Falcao, however fucking good he is.
Welbeck is a bloody good player in my eyes. The thread title says don't moan, so FFS don't moan.
The Transfer thread is there for criticism of Wenger failing to strengthen the other areas where we are short.
I believe he'll be a damn good addition to the side.
Welcome to the club Danny. :barscarf:

Because of his injury or because you wouldnt pay that money to any player ? If we could sign an absolute world class 100% fit striker for under £6m then I would sign him and pay him that type of wages per week because I believe that he could make a massive difference to our quest for trophies. I should also remind you of the situation when we signed sol from the scum - he was a freebie that we paid massive wages for becvause there was no transfer fee involved, and it is a similar situation here except that falcao's loan fee is fcuk all but the wages are massive as a result. If you object to the money on a principle then might I suggest that you acknowledge that modern football is awash with players earning far more money than they are worth (wally anyone ?).

1989, mate. Of course he would. He would go anywhere that would meet his wage demands. That is the modern footballer. :|

I'm sure he thinks he's going to get a role centrally, and in a sane world he would, but nothing Arsene does would shock me. Honestly, I would not be surprised if we see Welbeck out wide and Sanogoals still in the centre.
You're probably right DB10 but it does appear that playing centrally was a significant factor in him deciding to move.
Welbeck was also forced out wide for most of Sir Alex Ferguson's final season in charge and the England international admits it has been frustrating on the wing ahead of Louis van Gaal's arrival at Old Trafford.

"It does get frustrating," said Welbeck, who has been linked with a move away from United.

"You want to be playing in a certain position and you're not getting the opportunity to do that.

"It's the same for everyone - when they are being played out of position they don't really like it.

"I'd like to play central. I've been playing on the left for a while and it's got to the time where I want to stake a place up front."

The 23-year-old has netted 20 Premier League goals for United since making his debut in 2008 but he has a much better return for the national team.

Welbeck has scored eight goals in 21 games for England, which he believes is a result of him being 'let off the leash' up front for Roy Hodgon's men.

"My goals per game ratio is better for England," he said. "I'm much more free up front as there are three in midfield and three up front. That way there's a bit more defensive cover rather than me being that defensive cover.

"For United I'm more likely to be left wing of a four-man midfield with only two centre-mids so it's a bit more difficult for me to maybe make those runs to get in and score those goals when I've got to think about my defensive duties as well.

"Maybe I'm kind of let off the leash a bit more for England than United."

I knew you'd take the bait first Augie!!
My point is that this is only a loan for a year and if we took up the option to buy next summer then apparently we'd have to stump up at least £60m plus continuing with the wages which are £300k NET if you believe what's been agreed. I just don't think that's sustainable when we also need to buy 2/3 top drawer players in other areas.
Of course his knee might be weaker now but that's not the main reason for my reluctance to get involved.
We all know that we could and should have had Suarez but then would he have jumped ship as he did this summer? Probably, but that will always be one of Wenger's biggest fuck ups (and there have been many!)
I take your point about Campbell but that was a long term signing and not a loan and his wages weren't as stupidly big as Falcao's net wage demands.
Anyway, let's see how Mr Welbeck gets on this season. I'm getting old but I still believe he has enough about him to bring success to Arsenal. Yes he's not World Class but if he gets 20-25 this season it will have been decent business. £16m for an England regular is cheap and we all know Wenger loves a bargain!

As I said yesterday, just because he's better than Sanogo doesn't mean it's a good signing. I certainly don't recall seeing him for England or the mancs and wishing we would sign him...In fact usually the total opposite. But he's here now so will support him and I genuinely hope it works out.

So in the interest of being positive:-
He must know he needs to score a shit load to keep Giroud out the team so should be bang at it straight away.
He has a point to prove so should be bang at it.
He's young so should improve (finishing ).
He injects some much needed pace.
Hopefully gives ozil someone to link up with (if both played in correct positions ).
He seemed to really want to join us.
He really is a massive improvement on Sanogo.
I shall no longer refer to him as wellshit. :D

But IF we had of signed in for falcao yesterday, all we were committing ourselves to is a 1 year deal - if we felt at the end of this season that we couldn't justify the cost then we could walk away with no obligations. If on the other hand he was a roaring success and brought us back into the elite level again, then we could argue that it was dosh well spent even if we didn't sign him full time.

Where you argument falls down though is on the second highlighted part - arguing not spending that amount of money when we have other needs, only works if we are actually addressing those other needs. Personally a top class powerful DM was my number 1 priority (and has been for a number of years :( ) but having clearly decided not to bother buying a DM or centre back, then he could and should have gone all out for a TOP QUALITY striker. The man hasn't had a top quality powerful midfielder since PV4 left and if he hasn't bought one in the subsequent 9 years, then it is safe to say that he aint gonna buy one before he fcuks off. That means that there would be one less signing to affect the transfer kitty which further enforces my opinion that we should have gone top quality - btw I am not advocating falcao because I never thought it would happen anyway, but another £10m-£15m would have secured marco reus and that would be showing real intent instead of signing wellshit

Jaysus SG, if being played out of position frustrates him, he really has chosen the wrong club to move to!

Tbf Spuddy, if you scroll back through my posts on the world cup, you will see that I have always referred to him as wellshite because I have never rated him. I think that as my calling him that pre-dates his arrival, I should be allowed to continue to call him that until he proves otherwise 8)

Look lads, he's not the signing we wanted. Granted. He's not exactly set the PL alight to date. Granted. If he was top quality The Filth would never have sold him, and especially not to us. Granted.

But let's see how he plays for us, let's see what he can deliver. I remember being absolutely whelmed by our signing of Henry initially. Not for a minute comparing Welbeck to Henry, but sometimes players step up at a new club, they can improve. Fingers crossed.

I remember Fergie fancying him in the big games a lot of times. Against Real a few years ago he was outstanding and scored, I think Ferguson actually dropped Rooney for him in that match. He suffered with the signing of Van Persie there, as the desire for Ferguson to win the league one last time, over ruled his fabled youth policy.

Anyway, let's see how he does. Eeveryone connected with United ala Ferdinand, Phelan, Neville and Mullenstein have all said he could be brilliant for us and how good he is, so hopefully it pays off.
