Campbell's game was based predominately on his pace, which he had lost long before he left us. His shocking display in the defeat by West Ham was Stepanov-like, and the amateur dramatics that followed would make Gallas' birmingham performance look like that of an extra from neighbours.
This signing is a massive mistake, and can only end in farce, like his departure fron Notts County.
first, we don't have a leaking defence, but a bad goalkeeper. we have two brilliant central defenders, and sol comes as cover.

second, his game was not based on pace. he was strong, intelligent and excellent in the air. he was a complete defender, not one relying on pace, like kolo touré was.

that said, i still wouldn't have signed him, he is too old and probably not the same anymore. however, i'm glad that i'll see one of my heroes back in an arsenal shirt 8)

Yep.... free is king to Wenger.... :banghead: :banghead:

I predicted on another thread that the only player(s) he would buy, during this transfer window, would be on a loan as it's the cheapest option and doesn't impact on the way he is doing things currently with the team and squad.

We do have a leaking defence, it is actually worse than last season, "Gallas brilliant" you are taking the piss, sol "intelligent and the complete defender" I think not he was a penalty waiting to happen even in his prime and needed an area the size of the M25 to turn.
As for being glad to see him back in an Arsenal shirt, I find there is no room for sentiment in football, let's see who are glad to see him back when he is embarassing himself and the club both on and off the field.

Sky Sports News understands Arsenal are on the brink of signing Sol Campbell with the defender set to feature for the reserves on Tuesday night.

The 35-year-old is currently without a club after leaving League Two side Notts County last year, having played just one game for the Magpies.

Campbell has been training with Arsenal since leaving County and he is believed to have impressed Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.

Wenger refused to rule out a move for Campbell last week after reports first emerged of a possible move back to Arsenal.

Campbell's likely return has moved a step closer with the former England international expected to line up for Arsenal's second string against West Ham at Upton Park on Tuesday.

Campbell, who had a five-year spell with the Gunners between 2001 and 2006, has been linked with a number of clubs since his acrimonious departure from Notts County, but it appears he is set to make a shock return to North London.

I don't think AW is looking at this as a long term thing, or for him to be playing regularly. He's just covering an area where he knows we have little back up. Granted, you could ask why not elsewhere, i.e. goalkeeper? Well that's because AW doesn't see that as a weakness like the rest of us. He has three fit goalkeepers and only needs one per game. He has two fit CB's and needs two per game. Do the math! It's obvious why.
The real issue is why Campbell? And the answer is obvious, he's free and doesn't need to be tied in to a contract. We all know AW isn't keen on the Jan window despite having bought several good players in it before. He is doing this until the summer when he can possibly sign a non-cup tied quality CB.
I really don't think this is an issue. if he is fit then he'll fill a gap short term. He might not be everyone's first choice, me included, but he is an experienced CB that can fill a hole.

It seems a pretty bad idea in me eyes too. But none of us has seen him play since quite some time. Arsene has seen him every day on the training ground these last months. If he says the Sol is fit to play, then I will believe him. He can't be worse than tweety anyway, and Arsene can't be THAT blind that he would sign an unfit Sol! :hmmthink:
