Hmmm I think early concepts of 'football' were being fostered off the south coast of France at that time, but it didn't spread to Italy until certainly after reaching Japan and then England.highburyJD wrote:I thought it was Italia 90 and Fever Pitch: "By the tears of Gazza"Red Gunner wrote:"Au commencement Seigneur Arsène créa le football et Highbury." Football was invented by the English in the summer of 1992. Under the expert guidance of the gatekeepers at Lancaster Gate, football clubs from across the land signed up to compete in this "new" game that involved kicking a pigs bladder around a field for 90 minutes. These 22 inaugural members signed up and the FA Premier League was born

Despite what "old people" will have you believe, football pre-1992 didn't actually exist. The confusion comes from the fact that football existed, but only in writing & scripture and not in an actual physical sense. It is therefore acceptable to describe pre-1992 football as a Mythology rather than a sport, and like their Roman, Greek & Norse counterparts, the Anglo-football Mythology is a body of stories based around a mixture of folklore, myths and legends.
Popular fugures...
George Best (Aphrodite) - The God of love, lust, sex and beauty...and alcohol.
Pele (Zeus) - King of the gods.
Maradona (Hades) - Argentine God of the underworld, and arch enemy of Zeus.
Billy Bremner (Ares) - God of war, murder and bloodshed
Popular stories....
Instead of the Greeks story about Jason & the Argonaouts, and their quest for the golden fleece, the Anglo-football mythology writes about English football's relentless quest for the World Cup trophy that was stolen from them during the Trojan war of 1970, by the God of football, Pele, and his band of Brazilian conquistadors. Ever since then the story goes that every 4 years an army of English footballers embark on a quest to bring the golden fleece back to it's rightful home. Of course, it is written that English football was cursed to forever fail and to this day the quest continues. The story of this epic journey, can be found in the book, The Odyssey, by Graham Tayor & Bobby Robson.
Hope this helps

Anyone knows, if Pacos de Ferreira are really allowed to play their CL home games at their own ground with such a small capacity of just over 5.200 (or am I wrong here?)?

Don't see why not - I imagine there have been similar-sized grounds in the past. Saying that if they draw Arsenal/AC Milan certainly I'd expect they'd want to play it at Porto's ground to maximise revenue.Poldi wrote:Anyone knows, if Pacos de Ferreira are really allowed to play their CL home games at their own ground with such a small capacity of just over 5.200 (or am I wrong here?)?
I went to watch Nacional Madeira v Benfica when I was on holiday a few years back in a ground a bit smaller than that. Amazing setting and a great atmosphere despite the fact that 60% of people in the home end were wearing Benfica tops!

I used a fabulous bit of technology that I think might revolutionise use of the internet. It's called Google. Try it you will be amazed. There is also a fantastic site (I think they call it) called Wikipedia which is almost like an encyclopedia. In it I found the following information.

I also found that one of the major criteria for Cat 4 is that the stadium must hold a minimum of 8,000 spectators.A stadium must be category four to host games in the playoffs of the qualifying stage for the UEFA Champions League or any game in the main competition.[2] Category four is also required to host any game in the main competition of the UEFA Europa League [3] or the UEFA European Football Championship.[4]

It will be played at the Dragao; http://sol.sapo.pt/inicio/Desporto/Inte ... t_id=76991Poldi wrote:Anyone knows, if Pacos de Ferreira are really allowed to play their CL home games at their own ground with such a small capacity of just over 5.200 (or am I wrong here?)?
Been there twice already, the atmosphere will be shit as Pacos won't have anywhere near enough fans to fill it (not that it was particularly great at the Porto games) and Porto is massively boring.

Re: Champions League Qualifying Round 2013
Our possible opponents for the draw on Friday:
PSV
Metalist Kharkiv
Fenerbache
Real Soceidad
Pacos de Ferreira
I'll probably be coming over for the away leg and my preference would be: PSV, Sociedad, Fenerbache, Pacos, Metalist

I'm now getting so excited that the draw is around the corner. A glory night in Kharkiv to go alongside the momentous night in Udine will be enough to make a DVD

Re: Champions League Qualifying Round 2013
Absolutely - along with the wankfest at St James's Park in May we'll be showing all of those glorious highlights. The pre-2005 DVDs have been destroyed and replaced instead with glorious last day successes over Wigan and Newcastle, CL qualifying round clips and the honour of 17 years consecutive qualification for the Group stage. Tissues will be suppliedfalkirk goon wrote:SteveO 35 wrote:I'm now getting so excited that the draw is around the corner.
