Would be the perfect signing IMO and have thought that for at least 2 years now. An absolute enforcer of a midfielder who can play too. Wants to leave Southampton and would join us at the drop of a hat....but I'm sure dizzying prices and the prospect of killing Bielik's dream of 2 League Cup subs appearances for the next five years will prevent us signing him. Anyway JW10 will be back soon and we can pretend he's a defensive midfielder againmcdowell42 wrote:http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/ ... or-6989309

I've been an admirer of Wanyama for a few years now, we should have signed him from Celtic before Southampton did - we could have had a decent defensive midfielder 3 years ago. Better late than never bit will now cost us double the price......Wenker knows,

I'm not understanding how this guy would improve us. Comes from the same brainless school of football that Alex Song went to. Occasionally has a decent performance but is bang average most of the time. Would take Rabiot from PSG over this guy.SteveO 35 wrote:Would be the perfect signing IMO and have thought that for at least 2 years now. An absolute enforcer of a midfielder who can play too. Funny isn't it how we all see players differently. For me, Song was a player who had a really good year and then started to believe the hype - flicking everything off the outside of his boot and desperately trying to compete with the likes of Fabregas to be noticed. Wanyama strikes me much more as the 'bits and pieces' Gilberto type but with a really strong physical presence....not the type to be playing 40 yard Hollywood passes. When they beat us at the bowl in the League Cup and again at St Marys in the new years debacle he was the standout player that broke up all our attacks, and gave them the platform to break from. Anyway, TO1AW has dismissed the rumours so you don't need to worry. I'm sure there's a much cheaper alternative from Outer Mongolia available for "an undisclosed fee"MrT wrote:I'm not understanding how this guy would improve us. I can understand both side of arguments. Wanayma might be a good buy but for example Schneiderlin, Bender or even McArthur could be same or even better but a truth is Wenger won't buy anyone. He thinks that Arteta and Flamini are good enough to cover to Coquelin. I would take any of them because most of defensive midfielders in Premier league are better than Flamini or Arteta. Sad state of affairs but nothing new with Wenger and nothing change before we have a new manager or even owner.SteveO 35 wrote:Funny isn't it how we all see players differently. Song had his moments of brilliance, but it was overshadowed by being a thick c*nt for most of his career. Wanyama is good at being a tough fucker but he generally lacks the ability to build play and is limited technically. Prone to Song/Flamini-esque brain farts. Reminds me when Song constantly made pointless fouls which put us under pressure.SteveO 35 wrote:Funny isn't it how we all see players differently. The days of the old school no nonsense midfielders are gone. Tbf there aren't many technically sound enforcer types around. Vidal was a golden opportunity had we actually made an effort to sign him. Meanwhile, a relative unknown, Bruno Soriano at Villareal would be the perfect solution for DM. Although he is 31 he is solid and has a great passing game. Could do the job for 18 months.

We should definitely have gone for Vidal, Bayern got a bargain, but I'm not convinced about Soriano. Villlareal play a very defensive , counter-attacking game, so he's never left isolated. I think he's decent, but there are plenty of better players that we can afford.
Re: Is it time for a Jan Transfer Window Thread Yet?
Unless we can find a DM of Makelele standard, anyone else is no better than what we have already. The best DM players are disciplined and under Wenger style of play it'll be difficult for any DM to do the role. That's why coquelin really could develop into the best DM we've ever had as he's grown up in wengerball world.
In other words I haven't seen a DM in Europe that is consistently brilliant.

Arsenal will fight north London rivals Tottenham for Marseille's 22-year-old Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi. (Sunday Telegraph)
Do we have anyone on here who knows much about these players from Ligue 1. McDowell ?

‘We are open minded,’ he said.
‘We have to adapt to the willing of other clubs, but we are willing because we are short.’
Hopefully all the players we're targeting are owned by clubs who will be indulging in the season of goodwill sending us Christmas cards inviting us to bid for their players, who they will officially make available in the January sales with up to 70% off the original retail price
Arsene will be insistent that we respect our heritage with a Victorian themed transfer window that will see all the 'nouveaux riche' kids from West London opening their shiny new gifts whilst we search for the tangerines and walnuts at the bottom of our internally crafted stocking

Dont forget the old crown there (5 shillings) with the tangerine and Walnut

Are academies the reason why DMs and tough strikers as well as good keepers have just disappeared? I mean we know good ones of all of the three seem to develop at a much later age, so the sort of people going into academies are just the tippy tappy midfield sort that are 2 a penny these days (Or rather 2 a crown)
