An Arsenal side without the worldly gifts of Cesc Fabregas would simply be unthinkable and a massive blow to English football. He is head and shoulders above any other central midfielder in the country and certainly the most gifted player Arsenal has ever had since Brady. His absence in that team is always noticed and that is why Wenger must move heaven and earth to retain his services. I think half the problem with Cesc is that he shares a great deal of the Arsenal fans frustrations in feeling that the club need to show some much needed ambition. After a season where he formed such an excellent partnership with Mathieu Flamini, to lose his partner for the sake of loosening this rigid pay structure must have bemused Cesc, especially given that Flamini was out of contract. And you bet your last dollar that he was none to impressed, at the club's failure to bring in an ideal replacement to play alongside him, instead of the opting for the blooding of Song and Denilson in the first team. I believe last season due to the performances of Flamini, Cesc was freed up to hurt the opposition safe in the knowledge that the Frenchman was mopping up behind him. This year Cesc doesn't seem to have that safeguard and is too busy compensating for his partner in the middle. I personally feel the solution is staring Wenger in the face in the shape of Xabi Alonso, who only today was talking up a move away from Anfield. Not only will the Spaniard provide us with his wonderful array of footballing gifts, but he would be the ideal complement and foil for his friend and international teammate Cesc Fabregas in the Arsenal midfield. Hopefully the arrival of his friend would restore some much needed belief back into the player and subsequently put any thoughts of a return to Barca on the backburner- surely it would be worth taking that risk?

I would sign Alonso tomorrow but then I'm not the one controlling the clubs purse strings. I can't see them signing him in January either. They are shortsighted enough to think that his being unable to play in the CL for the rest of this season makes him worthless to us. The fact that his acquisition could be instrumental in us acheiving qualification for next years tournament (which is looking very dodgy at the moment) is too far ahead for them to see. We are heading toward being an 'also ran' type of club and Wenger needs to put the brakes on that particular slide as quick as possible. It happened to Liverpool and 18 years on they are still not really there yet. It can happen to us.

Agreed.QuartzGooner wrote:I think he left because he wanted a change of scene. He wanted to live in Italy and play for Milan, money was not so much a motive for him.
It bugs me a little when people disrespect Flamini.. or "Flamoney" as some call him.
the lad always gave everything for Arsenal, and I won't forget that. He would have been my choice as captain this season, if he'd stayed, but he wanted to moved to Milan, and although disappointing, it was his decision to make.
AC Milan are one of the "Super Clubs" and it's always going to be difficult to turn them down.. and isn't he part Italian on his father's side? so there's another reason for you.
Yes, money may have come into a little, but I dont believe that was his main motivation, and I still respect him, and wish him all the best.
