Sorry to be morbid. But could one of our english gooners explain to me why in england its nearly a week after someone dies before the funeral takes place eg jade goody .Is there a law or rule preventing a burial within a few days .Here in ireland burial takes place more or less in a couple of days.I figure this was the best place to ask rather than in the main section.

due to over crowding at cementries - we only have dozen undertakers in the whole of England and they can't cope with mass death

Jade Goody's is simply to do with publicity.
Why else have it nearly two weeks after the death and on a Saturday?

Think 2/3 days is the norm in Ireland, but it isn't uncommon for it to take at least a week here.

The reason Jade Goody's funeral is taking so long is due to the fact they are putting it to a public vote as to whether or not she gets buried or burned, its a BIG Brother thing

Some funerals take place two weeks after death, gives time for people to make arrangements and in case people want to attend from overseas.
But Jewish burials take place day same day as death, or occasionally day after. Same with Muslim ones.

My only experiance over here is in the catholic church, so cant speak for other religions, so here are a few reasons.
Not enough funeral parlours/undertakers. In eire almost every village has there own undertaker.
Cemetrys dont have the staff to dig graves (sad, but true). in eire where my family is from the family actually dig the graves.
Religion, there is an awful lot of families who have no faith and have no idea how to arrange funerals. in eire, most have faith and go to church.
Cost, most just cant afford it and end up having to take out loans to hold a funeral.
Waiting list, as said before you cannot hold funerals until the church says they can do it, and over here it always seems to be around a week.
I find that in Ireland funerals are far more respectful, this is due to the villages and tight net communities who all know each other. A funeral is a huge event, where the WHOLE TOWN/VILLAGE pays there respect. Over here funerals are like production lines sadly.

in ireland you die, have the removal from the funeral home next day and then burial the day after that,
and dont worry flash even if you are in a deep sleep your family will want to bury you fast just to be on the safe side

that's where we get the word 'wake' from . in the olden days it was not uncommon for a mistake to be made so people held a wake to see if the person woke up or was alive

it is also why some coffins come fitted with a bell
the delay in general is because the crematoriums are too busy, especially over the cold winter months

i know an undertaker

That's actually the origin of the phrases "dead ringer" and "graveyard shift". In older times a bell was fitted alongside the grave above ground with a cord in the coffin tied around the dead persons wrist. If they awoke and moved the bell would ring. For three days after the burial family members would hold solo vigils alongside the grave, including through the night, to see if the bell rang.

i heard Jade Goody was having a state funeral just like Princess Diana - but this time people will be throwing house bricks instead of roses
