Need some advice. Got a relatively cheap Lexmark printer but the ink cartridges are £20+ for the originals. Kids use the printer a fair bit for homework so I buy cartrdiges maybe every 2/3 months. Starting to question whether I'm being stupid! Cartridges on the Net that aren't originals I'm told are dodgy from a quality point of view but I'm starting to think I'm throwing my money down the drain.
Should I invest in some other form of printer? If so what? Don't really scan or print photos so not sure what's best value for money?

Eboue..... I don't possess a printer (as it really is a drain on the resources), if I have to print anything urgent off, I do this at work. (This is assuming you have a facility to do this at your place of work.)

Otherwise, for prints (photo's etc) I use Snapfish, they're quite reasonable, and if you sign up for them they do your first 40 prints free of charge, (I think you just pay postage)

So I would say, get rid of the printer and to to snapfish (before you ask, I don't have shares in them...)

Unfortunately in my line of work (as a secret agent) I don't have access to a printer at work so it looks like I'm stuck with pouring out money on the ink. As I say it's just outrageously expensive and I wasn't sure if I was missing a trick with other printers and/or cartridges that would save me money in the long run

I do a good bit of printing at work and always use the non original cartridges and I find them great. No difference in quality and a quarter of the price.

I'm tempted Rodders it's just that I tried using replicas but had probs. Maybe it was a one off and I should give 'em another go.

Ive heard cheap replacements are as good as the best ones too

They're fine. Just avoid any cartidges you have to fill up yourself... they give you a syringe of ink, which you have to inject into the printer - goes fucking everywhere and leaks until all the ink has run out.

Generic cartridges are fine.

I use replacements - and have had no problems - what you need to do (if you go the replacement cartridge route) is find a reliable supplier - either on-line or local - I use the local cartridge re-cycling shop - and they do all makes etc for a 1/4 of the price...they last ages - good quality...

Either that or get a flash stick and get the kids to do their printing at the local library (ours is free to all under 16's) or use flash stick in your workplace...even cheaper!
