Why is it that if you buy a iphone 3Gs in the states it costs $200 but here it costs £400???????? :? :? :? :? :?

You can't - its tied to 02 in this country and some other bunch in the states.

You can jailbreak them but it invalidates warranty and you may find some things don't work properly afterwards. And you won't get any help from Apple if you do this.

You can unlock them but as said previously you will invaidate the warranty.
