Ok, I'm buying a camera this week for my trip to Peru. I'm wanting the best camera possible (who doesn't!) for £80-130ish; ideally with good zoom facilities and err... good at taking photos, I guess oh, ideally a li-ion battery thingy and good movie capture.

Any opinions/help would be appreciated! (especially from Bas and ****"y, obviously!)

At the moment, I'm buying a Kodak Z950 12MP Camera (£125)

whichever you buy, be sure to read some reviews before. i just bought a camera (a nikon d5000) and read lots of reviews, really helped me choose.

i recently got a kodak easyshare v803 and its a little beauty. im not the most gifted with techical stuff so the easier the better and this is great.

I'm not that talented either, Rebel! - any camera with the word 'easy' in the title gets my attention!

PS - Blimey BG, that's a serious camera you bought!

The Canon Ixus series is popular. I have an Ixus 70 which is now a bit outdated but it takes good photos.
Check on amazon for the different models and reviews as they vary in price, and also performance.
Might also be worth buying a spare battery and memory card.

yep i really enjoy photography, and i wanted a dSLR for my trip next year

Yes, I'll be buying a couple of spare batteries. They're cheap on Amazon, so I'll definately do that.

Speaking of Amazon...

I'll be in the Amazon for a week, and camping (with the anacondas and tarantulas ) for most of that week, so electricity/recharging might be a real issue - hence the spare (fully charged) li-ion batteries!

Although, if I can hold on until next year, I might just mug BrazilianGooner and take his DSLR!

Ive got a Nikon coolpix its about 5 or 6 years old now so is well outdated but it takes a lovely picture even had others comment about how nice the pics are. My wife dropped it the other day and the battery door broke off but its still works perfectly so would def. recommend Nikon

Stewards at any big sports event or concert will chase you away if your gear looks even vaguely professional but don't mind standard pocket cameras. I've been to many concerts with the camera body in my shirt and a big lens down my trouser leg (just pleased to see you!).
We bought a Panasonic dslr for holidays etc. It's not bad and the new model has interchangeable lenses which we would have liked.

cheers, RS! i want to take some nice pics when i'm there, so i'll try to take it as you say, the body and the lens apart my telephoto lens are not big, so maybe they won't mind anyway
