Internet Security Advice Required...

Need some advice lads. It's that time of year when my 3 User McAfee Internet Security has expired and to renew would cost the following:
1 Year £32.99 (after initially asking for £48.89 a month ago!!!)
2 Years £55.99
3 Years £79.99
Should I go ahead and take up one of the offers? Or is there something else I can use that will give me peace of mind but not cost much, if anything?
Any constructive help would be appreciated.
(I will only leave this thread up temporarily as it might also be useful to others.)

In my opinion, Mcafee and Norton are absolute bullshit, and the only reason why they're so heavily advertised by companies like PC World is because of the profit margin being larger on those two products for them. A much better anti-virus product would be Kaspersky, so give that a look over aswell.

IHH.
a few questions first to identify your requirements.
How many computers do you have ?
if you have more than one, then don't bother.
Do you have a copy of the windows platform to re-install windows when required.
if you do then don't bother.
Do you have copies (illegal or not) of the software you are most likely to be using on the pc
if so don't bother
If you answer yes to all of these then i wouldn't bother. My laptop has never had a virus protection on it, and when it starts to act all wierd i just re-install windows and presto all is good again. This usually happens once/twice a year.
If you only have the one machine i would go with MM99 said. Commercially your opinion on teh products is down to you. However as far as resources on your pc go, using mcaffee or norton is like letting your machine be raped while taking a piss.
what you pay for with those products is not what they do but the cat that they subscribe to the latest services on what constitues a virus or malicious prgram so your always being scanned while the machine is on. Most other programs do not provide this service and only have a static list so perform checks at timed intervals. It depends on the elver of safety you want. Permanent as raping i'd go with norton not mcaffee.
every now and then checks virtually anyone else will do.

I read somewhere that Macs will become the target of malware and spyware sometime soon.

The SH/Renepo worm (also known as Opener)
can turn off the Mac OS X firewall and other security software; will download and install hacker tools for password-sniffing and cracking…"
Mr **** would love that it turns off.... but will it turn it back on...

As already mentioned McAfee and Norton aren't a viable option. They are both extremely bulky and unknown to you, prevent your system from flowing naturally.
It depends what you are looking to secure. There are numerous free programs (none of which have been mentioned here yet). Those that have are sh1te, in my opinion, and, my opinion should be noted in this area.
It also depends on what OS you are using. Vista I presume?
As said, depends on what you need securing. If you wish to get the best, Kaspersky is the best.
If you are a home user who simply wants piece of mind while using online banking and browsing online, I can tell you of a handful of free programs as well as free add ons which will protect you from the hoards of animals we share the web with.
