I don't know much about like levelling and equipment etc but I can mix vinyl and have played out a few times...

Don't know if this is of any help to you. What type of DJing you looking to get into?

Have DJ'd as a hobby with reasonably regular bookings for about 10 years now. Don't take it as seriously as I used to anymore although still got a fairly nice setup at home...

Looking to play Dance music really, Tech, Progressive house that kind of stuff.

Just wanted to know:

How much would a fairly decent set of decks set me back?

Where do i get my music from? Was looking at doing the CD mixing. Do i donwnload it or what?

Do i need to go on a DJ course or just play around with mine?

I do want to know a few other things but ill start with these ones.

A minimum of about £500 probably. You'll need not just the CD decks but a mixer too and an amp/speakers if you've not got these already. Pioneer are leaders in the CD deck field & you'll find the 1000s & 2000s in almost every nightclub in the world. However they also do a range of cheaper/mid-range decks from about £400 upwards. These days you'll probably want ones with a USB function which lets you whack all your mp3s on a flash drive & play them off that, rather than burning everything to CD. Take a look here to give you an idea of what's on offer & the prices; http://www.decks.co.uk/main_packages_portal

You can either play/rip your own CDs or obtain your music legally or *cough* illegally. The biggest legal download sites are Beatport, JunoDownload, Traxsource, trackitdown, Boomkat & 7Digital. Many record labels will have their own mp3 shops on their sites though. Then you can burn these mp3s to disc or stick em on a USB stick, as detailed above.

A course can be OK to pick up the basics but in my opinion the costs outweigh the advantages. Have a play about or get mates to show you the ropes if you know any who are into DJing. That said, there is a certain amount that you probably can't teach. It will come easier if you have something of a musical background. Regardless of what those "dj-bashing" folks say you will need to know about bars, musical structure, rhythm, time signatures as well as being able to notice subtle speed changes in tracks.

That's probably about the basics of your questions, shout if you need more info!
