any budding experts on here, know of a good camera to buy - i don't want something to fancy dan and costing me £300+

just a decent digital zoom, vew finder, continous photographing, etc, etc

whats the best make to buy

Any Nikon for £250-£300 will get you a good one

what are you looking for, rosie? at the price range you suggested, you can go for compacts or prosumers. the latter obviously takes better pictures and has more optical zoom (which is what you want, digital zoom is rubbish and can be done on the computer afterwards), however compacts are obviously much better to carry in your shirt pocket.

and the other question is, do you have any special porpuse for that camera or is it just regular trips/family photos stuff?

If you are going with a DSLR then you will get most bang for your buck with Olympus - their lenses are supperior to Nikon and Canon. So if you compare Nikon, Canon and Olympus cameras at say £300 the lense on the Olympus will be as good as a Nikon or Canon lense on a camera worth maybe £450 - £600 (roughly).

Best advice is to go into a good camera shop and explain to the guys there what you want to achieve and what your price range is, and they will be able to point you at what you need.

but if he's going to spend 300 bucks tops, isn't a DSLR out of his reach DB10gooner? i'm not really aware of prices in the UK even though i bought my 35mm prime lens in london, but i'd guess that even the cheaper DSLRS are more expensive than that, and he'd still have to go after accessories like flash, other lenses, filters, etc, which would make it even more expensive?

honestly, DSLRs are wonderful and all, but i'm sure there are a lot of people around who don't want to carry those huge things with them... i found myself more and more using my iphone camera to register simple moments and my nikon to really take the really good pictures in situations where i have enough time, patience, ability to create decent lighting, etc.

and fucking hell, serious photography is an expensive hobby
