'Grief Porn'

Just quickly establish that this isnt a thread to say that i dont care about the death of gary speed, i was shocked when i first heard it but its now becoming an ultimate exercise in the phenomenon of grief porn.

Overactive hyperbole flying around everywhere and people/organisations falling over each other to show how they care the most. Is this really about Gary Speed anymore? Or is it about peoples vanity/good PR?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/footba ... -loss.html

I've lost quite a few close family members down the years and i was lucky enough to be able to grieve in my own way with one funeral, rather then every sporting event being turned into a funeral with other peoples grief shoved down my throat.

Im not saying that his death should be ignored of course but every time something like this happens nowadays its getting way overboard imo.

Facebook is the worst. People using someone's death to reflect the attention back on themselves by over-exaggeratingly declaring to everyone just how upset they are.

"Soooooo sad to hear about Gary Speed. Was crying for hours last night, i'm soooo upset. Devastated for his family. Like my status, please comment! Like me! Look how compassionate I am! Acknowledge me!"

STFU, you didn't even know the guy. You hadn't even heard of him until now in many cases.

A sad & tragic incident no doubt, but I don't feel the need to declare to everyone just how upset or devastated by it I am.

I agree. The facebook generation seem to fall over themselves to show how upset they are and how much they care and this is fuelled by the media. It goes beyond being respectful and ends up actually looking like the opposite as it seems as if they dont really care that the person has died, they just care about having a lot of people saying "oh i agree, what a nice gesture, better 'like' your status" etc.

I don't mean this to sound harsh about Gary Speed, but the fact is he wasnt overly important in the grand scheme of things (very few of us are). He was a very competent footballer (not world class like, but very good), he seemed like a nice bloke and the manner of his death is strange and shocking and I really do feel sympathy for his wife and, especially, his kid. I would have no problem whatsoever with having a minutes silence for him at the next SAFC game as it is a footballing death and it is good to show that all fans can express sympathy for a situation like this, even though I actually feel that a minutes silence at the clubs he represented would be more than enough. But the way everyone seems to feel the need to make a comment about him is ridiculous- fair enough from people like Robbie Savage who knew him (he made some lovely comments about him in the wake of his death, as did Bryn Law on Sky), but you've got politicians of all descriptions chipping in, blatantly in some cases just to show that they have compassion, just about every one of my friends on facebook put "RIP Gary Speed" as their status etc

I've seen mags on facebook changing their profile pictures to pics of Speed, others saying NUFC (who try to claim all the grief in all cases like this as they did for Bobby Robson) should have all players wearing number 11 next week etc. Its sad that he's died, its big news the day it happens, the next day maybe have a few articles with comments from those who knew him, the next matches could have a minutes silence I suppose, but thats it and after that it should just be left so that the people who genuinely knew, cared about and loved the man can grieve in their own way without a load of "look at me" arseholes going on as if it somehow affects them when in reality they'll have heard the news and, like myself and most others, thought "oh god, what a shame, awful for the family" and got on with their day

Have to say that I'm amazed that his wife, who was the one who found him hanging in the garage, is attending the Leeds "memorial" this weekend and Newcastle have delayed their own "memorial" so that she can attend that as well.

Everyone to their own of course, but I'd have thought that at this time she'd want some privacy with her two boys.

Also thought it might be some knew form of porn that I had not yet discovered (unlikely). One where two fit lezzers lie there guzzling each others gowks whilst crying... :D

TBH at first I thought it was about that "ballbusting" porn where a bloke lets a bird boot him repeatedly in the knackers and stamp on his cock and that. One of the more strange fetishes imo

I prefer to watch lesbians crying. With a mouthful of beef curtains. Awesome. 8)
