I play a variety of flutes, but was wondering what kind of flute/whistle is being played by this guy at the beginning and the middle section?

Yes, they are called 'Hawks Bells' - and are rather expensive, they have the best 'clarity' out of the many available types of bell and do not rust if soaked in a mild oil every new moon. :|
