Saturday Evening Football - Lets have more

Post by nut flush gooner »

Loved the atmosphere at the emirates tonight, evening games on a saturday allow an afternoon of boozing which really ramped up the noise this evening. When we support the team like this they respond. Could barely hear the thieves.

What library?????

Unfortunately I spunked the last of my coin on going to the Dortmund and Chav games. Against the Chavs the atmosphere was shite, against Dortmund it was alright where I was, me and a few blokes around me sung throughout but I think with mid week games a lot of people come straight from work which doesn't always help the atmosphere.

Sounded good on the telly tonight though, I especially liked one moment where the crowd warned Arteta that he had a bin dipper coming up behind him. You don't get little things like that when "atmosphere" is just some *word censored* with a megaphone leading the same one or two monotonous songs for 90 minutes which everyones ears tuned out of after about 5 minutes.

I hope it wasn't the scousers singing "your support is fucking shit" at one point in the second half because I couldn't hear a peep from them all night.

Suits some more than others. I can see the attraction if you live locally but travelling from Cardiff for 5.30 kick offs you still don't have time to get anything done before you leave and you don't get back til about half 11. Works a bit better if it's a big game like this but normally 5.30 Saturday games are at home to shit teams like Hull etc and the atmosphere isn't necessarily any better.

My mate travels from belfast every home game. He said the whole experience last night was more enjoyable than a 3pm or lunchtime ko.

Unfortunately if you travel a distance, inconvenience is all part and parcel of following the team. BUT, most fans still live locally and it shouldn't be an issue when deciding KO times. I dont agree with you about the atmosphere vs lower sides in the league, nearly all the saturday evening games I have been to have been much better atmosphere wise. Why? Simple its gooners drinking all afternoon.

Tend to think an evening match, under floodlights is far better than an afternoon game for some reason anyway.

Remember the Friday night match at Highbury v Newcastle as few years ago? Cracking atmosphere as everyone was bang up for it, and had obviously sneaked out of work early doors. The rest of the weekend was to come, so everyone felt especially liberated by that kick off time and day for some reason.

Met Police confirmed shortly after that there would be no repeat though, some excuse about Friday being a busy night for general disorder anyway, sodidn't want another 38000 fans in the area.

I guess the Premier League didn't get the memo, as we played Leeds on a Friday night (5-0 win) later in the season.

We also played at Highbury on two other Fridays in the 2003/04 season: home to Wolves (Boxing Day), and Liverpool (Good Friday).

Not often that you play four home games on Fridays in one season.

I remember that Leeds game very well, especially the Henry goal where the defender tripped him and even falling over he managed to slot it away. I remember it being a bit odd with the game being on a Friday - particularly as if you're travelling a midweek trip becomes a bigger deal, so having the long journey without the having to get up for work/school the next day was different. Remember it being brilliant actually.
