Can someone tell me why 4th place is even remotely exciting?

Clue: none of the money it generates is yours and nor will any of it make any difference as it didn't at any point under Kroenke 2011 to 2017

Looking at Liverpool and city remaining fixtures, you can’t really see either of them dropping points anywhere. Maybe Liverpool away to Villa. Can’t see City fucking it up.

In and of itself it isn’t. But it’s a marker of progress of sorts (eg Liverpool have finished in the top 4 the past three seasons, despite only winning one title). And it deprives rivals of much needed funds/confidence. And at least you get the possibility of some interesting European ties.

All comes down to when they play each other doesn't it?

Both boringly better than the rest

Absolutely hate the fact we have no cups left....such a massive fucking bore

But is it progress? Compared to the last 5 years maybe. Compared to the last 18 since we won the league, not at all

Interesting to me is new teams we've got a chance again. Boring is fucking Bayern rinsing us 10-2

It is a bit. But as someone else said - games against the top two are a waste of time at the moment for everybody. And it could be this way for another couple of seasons yet. Forget about winning the league and just try to get into Europe - where at least you get some games against big historic names who won’t necessarily steamroller us like Liverpool/City.

And it could be worse. At least we’re trying to build from the ground up having wasted the best part of a decade (imo) under Wenger without a clear strategy other than buying random young talent and telling them to “go out and express themselves”. Look at Man Utd for how bad things could be. Biggest club in the world with an eye wateringly exoensive squad full of has beens, one season wonders and social media clowns.

I hear you, but I also say I'd back Man Ure to win the league or a European trophy before we do

Some ‘small margins’ could have swung the game our way. After Martinelli rinsed Alexander-Arnold if the pull back is more accurate, it’s a goal. If Odegaard finishes an easy chance, it’s a goal. If Ramsdale protects his near post properly, it’s not a goal. If Saka clears the ball properly, it’s not a goal.
But that’s where we are. Not clinical enough and schoolboy mistakes cost us another big game.
But the worst thing about tonight was the feeling that when we did go behind, didn’t everyone know we wouldn’t be able to at least get a draw! So frustrating.
And as everyone knows, a new partner for Partey and a minimum 20 goal a season striker are an absolute must in the Summer.
Here’s hoping.

Strategy under Wenger was to pay the stadium off. Which we did because we continually finished top 4 and reached last 16 of CL. It wasn't about competing for the title.

I Hope I'm proven wrong but I'd be shocked if we get top 4 by the end of the season. 5 points separates 4th to 8th and we have Chelsea away, West Ham away and Spurs away in the run in along with a home game against United, can see us shitting the bed and ending up 8th by the end of the season.

That's the closest we've been vagainst Liverpool for 5 seasons. We dictated that game for 55 mins.
Martinelli was the best player on that pitch tonight. We needed a striker of Firmino's quality and we would've been 2 up before they scored. Probably first game since he was dropped and sold we could've done with a striker of Aubameyang's quality. Had we had a striker who does the business in the 6 yard box, we'd be have won that game tonight. It's clear where we are as a team. It's clear the areas of the pitch we need to improve. Two striker's and a midfielder to replace xhaka.
It's how we perform against chavs, spuds, manure and shammers that'll define our season from here.

No one said it's exciting but it's essential to get back to challenging for the title. You have to get to 4th before you get to 1st.
Until the stadium got paid off the money never got put back into the squad. By the time we had the money to spend the rot had well and truly set in. Taken 4 years to renovate the team but keep building and by finishing 4th that'll help us get us challenging again. This team with 3 new top quality additions will be pushing Liverpool and City next season. We've seen how far we have developed from August to January. That progress needs to continue and 4th place is a key marker. Surely you can recognise that?
Kroenke has achieved his goal in the NFL now they'll focus on achieving the same in soccer, with us, which ultimately is CL success.
