It was a “dig deep and brace yourself” sort of win, one which we didn’t deserve.

We wouldn’t have won that a few years ago, that’s for sure. That doesn’t imply we’re any better, mind.

Saliba was fantastic. The calm in the storm.

3pts on the board, let’s kick on.

Pretty harsh calling the people who said Tierney will struggle to nail down the no. 1 spot at left back this season (of which I was one) drunk or brain dead Augie.

Yeah you pick out a couple of instances where he got beaten down the flank - but you don’t mention his assist or the rest of the game where I thought he was very good both at the back and going forward.

I’ve seen Tierney beaten all ends up at LB several times. Doesn’t mean he’s shit. Andy Robertson is the best left full in the league for me and he gets turned and beaten down the flanks in games. It happens, you’re not going to win every dual or be perfect for the 90 mins.

Saliba was outstanding tonight but someone will rinse him this season too but it won’t make me or anyone else who says he’s a proper player brain dead or drunk either.

You move up into a forward position, someone loses possession and suddenly there’s a player in behind you. It’s gonna happen in games.

Personally I think it’s great that we finally have genuine competition in a position that’s caused us serious problems for the last few seasons.

I know you were against the transfer from the off but you’re better than picking the 2 occasions in the game where he got beaten while ignoring the rest of his performance which was very good just to score points.

What’s that gold chant haven’t heard it before
https://twitter.com/afcstuff/status/155 ... SaD2ESzlyw

I, honestly, thought it was about the invincibles when I heard it on the telly.

“Ours is gold. GOLD.
We were un-beat-ableee.
We had the power to score.
We were invincibleee.
We were unbeatable”

That’s what my slightly (lol) tipsy self heard.

Palace the new Wimbledon….long ball c unts
Wimbledon won the FA Cup back in the days of the Football League, Charlton have also won the FA Cup late '40's, QPR won the League Cup in the '60's. Fulham even got to a Europa Cup final.

Palace, Millwall, Brentford & Orient have never won a major trophy, losing cup finals is not a trophy, nor is finishing 2nd in the league or winning a lower division title.

Meanwhile Sutton are supposed to be a London club, but like Barnet & Watford are a bunch of feckin yokels, a bit like the Swamp Dwellers living in the marshes! :censored:

Fuck 'em all! :barscarf:

Positives

1. The start was electric and we really should have been 2 up inside 20 mins. This has to be the template for the rest of the season, we need to start with a bang and kill games off in the first half itself.

2. Jesus looks a different class as compared to what we have had for the last couple of years. Always on the move and his work rate and ability to harass defenders and nick balls off them even when he seems second best is absolutely top notch and to add to that the skill to get past players in a tight area and get a shot in. He did drop off in the second half but that more down to his teammates not finding him consistently.

3. William F*cking Saliba, boy this kid is something. I dont recall the last time I felt so calm and assured watching an Arsenal CB. He already looks like our best defender.

4. Thought White struggled at times but had a good game overall and handled Zaha reasonably well. I know people here don't rate Zaha but he is a nightmare to deal with specially 1v1.

5. Zinchenko was excellent on the ball and really fits the role of an inverted LB. I agree that he can be got at 1v1 by a tricky wide player and has a weakness there but you minimize that risk by staying compact when you lose the ball and not allowing wide players have a free run at him. The way we want to play that is to dominate possesion Zinchenko's qualities outshines his weaknesses. I don't think there is much between KT and Zinchenko, KT is probably the better defender while Zinchenko is better on the ball.

Negatives

1. We allowed Palace back in the game after the first 20 mins and it was all down to sloppiness from Ramsdale and Gabriel. There is a callousness about Ramsdale at times and he really needs to cut it out of his game. He did redeem himself with the saves though and I thought his overall distribution was good.

2. We had very little control of the game in the second half and a major reason for that was Odegaard being absolutely gash. I love Odegaard but he really needs to start getting hold of games and dictate the tempo consistently and be more decisive inside the box, he should have scored with the chance Jesus created.

3. ESR and Vieira being back will definitely improve our bench but we still look short of quality. We absolutely need a couple of more signings at the bare minimum.

BBC Sports:

Arsenal's high-profile summer arrivals have claimed the headlines in a pre-season bubbling over with goals and optimism - but it was an "old" new face who made the biggest impression when the serious business started.

Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko have brought their winning mentality from Premier League champions Manchester City as they reunited with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta as he tries to push the Gunners forward this season.

And while both showed quality and pedigree as Arsenal opened the season with a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace, it was the defensive performance of 21-year-old William Saliba that outshone everyone else to create a real stir of excitement among the visiting fans.

Saliba took the scenic route to his first Premier League start after joining Arsenal from St Etienne for £27m in July 2019, taking in loan spells back at his parent club then at Nice and Marseille, impressing so much there that he won full France honours.

He was Ligue 1 Young Player Of The Season last year and his spell away from Emirates Stadium raised questions about where he fitted into Arteta's plans, with Marseille keen to make his loan deal permanent.

Match report: Crystal Palace 0-2 Arsenal

Arteta insisted he was simply handling Saliba with care until his development reached a stage when his time had come - and judging by a truly outstanding display at Selhurst Park, it has now arrived.

Jesus, who will offer Arsenal pace, movement and goals, shone as they took the lead through Gabriel Martinelli but as the game went on and Palace raised a gallop at last, Saliba delivered such calm command and controlled power that he emerged as the game's outstanding performer.

Saliba's central defensive partnership with Gabriel is in its infancy and there were anxious moments when Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale was called into action to save from Odsonne Edouard and Eberechi Eze.

Throughout, however, Saliba was unruffled and virtually faultless to delight his manager.

It is one game, an early call, and no-one at Arsenal will be getting carried away with their result or the performance.

Saliba, however, looked such an exciting, composed talent, confirming all the background noise that this was a top class defender ready for the Premier League, that a little excitement should be allowed.

Arsenal simply carried their thrilling pre-season form into this first game of the season, dominating possession and running Palace ragged in a fashion that suggested Arteta has used his time well, bolting young and established talent from last season onto his new acquisitions.

They had to survive pressure of sorts from Palace and it took a late Bukayo Saka shot deflected in by the head of Palace's England defender Marc Guehi to seal the deal, but this was fully deserved win.

It was all so different from the opening Friday night of last season when a Covid-hit Arsenal were handed the unwanted assignment at newly promoted Brentford, sinking meekly without trace in an awful start to the season, £50m new boy Ben White enduring a nightmare debut, although he was not alone.

Here, Arsenal showed no nerves in the sort of atmosphere Selhurst Park specialises in and could have been ahead even before Martinelli opened the scoring, all Palace's early enthusiasm given its only outlet by chasing the ball to all parts of the pitch.

Arteta has hinted strongly that there will be more new arrivals before the end of the transfer window, with Leicester City's Youri Tielemans constantly linked, and while Manchester City and Liverpool are hotly tipped to conduct another two-horse title race, Chelsea are in a state of flux and Arsenal could easily mount a top four challenge.

Arsenal's manager has received some lampooning for his style in the latest "All Or Nothing" access all areas documentary, but the opening evidence suggests he has done some smart work this summer.

Fabio Vieira, the £34m midfield signing from Porto, will be an asset when fit, while there was the welcome sight of Kieran Tierney restored to full health and coming on as a substitute, ready to restore his influence.

Arsenal's fans will be wary of reaching conclusions too quickly but the imperious manner in which Saliba strode through a game that always presents a test, even with Palace short of their best, will have only added to the feelgood factor engendered by the addition of proven, winning quality in the shape of Jesus and Zinchenko.

The joyous Gunners fans chanted "top of the league" in the closing moments - tongue in cheek of course but a loud affirmation that this was a much more pleasurable experience than their last opening Friday night of Premier League action.

BTW: Why the fuck were we wearing that scabby looking Pink Kit? - I thought our away / 2nd strip was the Black & Gold one? - I much prefer a version of the traditional Yellow & Blue and although the Black/Charcoal & Gold looks classy, that Pink kit; the one that looks like some scabby scum kit that was left in the wash with a Red Sock or something.... Just

Despite the win, last night was very worrying.
The squad looks stronger, but for me the way the game went confirmed that this team's biggest weakness is it's manager!
We dominated the first half and should have put the game to bed.
We didn't, therefore Arteta's job is to ensure the players stay focussed and continue to do the right things, but he also has to be able to anticipate what changes an opposition manager might make!
I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall at both halftime team talks!
Arteta " great work keep it up"
Whereas Vieira has obviously given his players a constructive roasting, made a few tactical changes and identified where to target our midfield and defence!
Palace take full control of second half, Arteta clueless on how to counteract!
I've no doubt, had Palace scored, they would have gone on to win the game.
This will be a pattern that will continue again this season and we won't get lucky like last night!
It will be more frustrating because we now have a squad capable of making top 4, but we don't have a manager capable of achieving it.

Overall was a very good win....Palace is not an easy place for us

Did not see first 40 mins but from what i saw of second half Palace were causing us serious problems...much like last season there

Understand we have players waiting to come in but that midfield worries me

They got totally over run at times....wont even mention xhaka

As for Zinchenko he got skinned for pace several times....he does not look a left back....would move him up into midfield

Odergaard...hes no captain thats for sure...dissapears when going gets tough...of course hes talented with his passing and vision

Ben White...never been convinced on this guy......even at CB.....he seems to panic under pressure....but given time hes decent on the ball

Ramsdale made some good stops....hes full on....hes never going to be anything else...he does a good job

Saliba....FFS everything i seen of this fella tells me hes going to be world class....yes hes 21....they need him on a very good wage and on a long term contract as they can agree ( heard they were negotiating not sure were they are with that)

Have we enough to get 4th place.....with Saliba....maybe...he will make a huge difference

Last night was ayew - a c.unt so useless that he wasnt even an automatic starter at swansea ffs   Honest to god I looked at him and schlupp and the striker from celtic in their line up pre-match and said to myself that these are either missing a lot of players or are absolute gash. We as fans seem to assume a position where we automatically see only positives in every new signing we make, but I have watched this guy play for citeeh for past few seasons and can say with total confidence that he is a shit left full (cant say if he would be good midfielder tho). Rodders points to his involvement in the first goal, but tierney was only on a few minutes and played a big part in the second goal (starting with throwing himself into and winning an aerial challenge from ramsdales "pass" that most of ours would have shied away from).

It always worries me when I see managers (in any sport) afraid to make changes even when things are not going well - in the second half last night pep's cone boy stood there paralysed by fear and we were getting destroyed at the time. Any manager can makes a substitution and it not work out, but as long as it is made with some sort of logic I can accept that - what I can never accept is a manager who is afraid to make a change in case it is the wrong one lest he gets blamed for it, and last night he should have had odeargod off at least 20-25 mins before he relented. As soon as the second goal went in he sent 3 subs out to warm up straight away, and straight away I said that he has thrown off his cowards cape now that the game is won

In second half ayew was raping zinchenko. Let that thought sink in for a minute. Ayew is absolutely fcuking dogshite on his best days, and he was pissing by zinchenko like he wasnt there

I called it early in the game about how shit odeargod was, but our central midfield as a whole was poor all night - it is very hard to cover the huge level of ineptitude that is xhaka, but partey in second half should have just parked himself in front of our centre backs, but yet they were getting so much space in there

First game of season so the 3pts is the priority for sure, but much improvement will be needed in the coming games, and for those of you drunk/braindead retarded enough to suggest that a fit Tierney might struggle to get his place ahead of zinchenko.... :coffeespit: :coffeespit: :coffeespit: :coffeespit:
Wow , thats harsh even for you , personally I would have moved Zinny to midfield and took Xhaka off when we were bring overan . Hoping when KT is fully fit Xhaka will be under oressure for his place especially if Tieliemans comes as well.
