The Birth of a Star caught by the James Webb Space Telescope...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-67243772

What gets me is they give these utterly banal names / titles ( HH212 ) to these amazing and miraculous events etc... Surely they should hand the naming of such things over to current great writers or poets....

Imagine you could go back in time 4.6 billion years and take a picture of our Sun just as it was being born. What would it look like?
Well, you can get a clue from this glorious new image acquired by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
Towards the centre of this object, called HH212, is a star coming into existence that is probably no more than 50,000 years old.
The scene would have looked much the same when our Sun was a similar age.
You can't actually see the glow from the protostar itself because it's hidden within a dense, spinning disc of gas and dust.
All you get are the pinky-red jets that it's shooting out in polar opposite directions.

To me it looks like an Umbilical Cord of light!
I really enjoy this thread, OneBard mate. Keep up the good work. 8) 8)

Quantum Entanglement and the Possibility of Travelling Faster Than The Speed Of Light:

Not physically possible. All bullshit. There you go. Sorted - without the need for a fucking thesis or a fucking yootoob video. 8)

Prove It! :D
I am not a scientist but I am sure Freddie observed that he was 'travelling at the speed of light' during 'Don't Stop Me Now', so that surely suggests it can be done. In fairness though, he didn't imply he could actually go any faster than that, so it possibly represents the absolute limit that can be achieved. That is certainly quicker than average speed on the western stretch of the M25 earlier today.

Coincidentally, Brian May knows a bit about stars too, as he married Angie from EastEnders.

BBC:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-67545539

Fragments from the asteroid US space agency Nasa has described as the most dangerous rock in the Solar System have arrived in the UK for study.
The tiny pieces of rock and dust from the object known as Bennu will be subjected to a battery of tests at the Natural History Museum, and the Open, Manchester and Oxford universities.
It is a small donation but ample, says the NHM's Prof Sara Russell.

"One hundred milligrams of beautiful" was how she described it to BBC News.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Okay, I am all for exploration and investigation if it is going to actually benefit The World etc... But who the fuck knows what they are tampering & messing with, that tiny fragment could be a piece of Consciousness from an even greater and more powerful conscious and sentient being...These fucking scientists think they have carte blanche to just crush this and slice that and zap it with all kinds of what the fuck-not!... So that huge fucking Asteroid / Rock 'knows' they (the scientists0 on Earth have been carrying out experiments on one of its own... so the next time it flies by in the solar system it 'decides' to take a little detour and wipe out the whole fucking planet, all because of these ArrogantCUNTS!. :cussing:

Pliosaur discovery: Huge sea monster emerges from Dorset cliffs

Image

The skull of a colossal sea monster has been extracted from the cliffs of Dorset's Jurassic Coast.

It belongs to a pliosaur, a ferocious marine reptile that terrorised the oceans about 150 million years ago.

The 2m-long fossil is one of the most complete specimens of its type ever discovered and is giving new insights into this ancient predator.
The skull will be featured in a special David Attenborough programme on BBC One on New Year's Day.

There are gasps as the sheet covering the fossil is pulled back and the skull is revealed for the first time.
It's immediately obvious that this pliosaur is huge and beautifully preserved.
There isn't a specimen anywhere else to match it, believes local palaeontologist Steve Etches.
"It's one of the best fossils I've ever worked on. What makes it unique is it's complete," he tells BBC News.
"The lower jaw and the upper skull are meshed together, as they would be in life. Worldwide, there's hardly any specimens ever found to that level of detail. And if they are, a lot of the bits are missing, whereas this, although it's slightly distorted - it's got every bone present.

The skull is longer than most humans are tall, which gives you a sense of how big the creature must have been overall.
You can't help but focus on its 130 teeth, especially those at the front.

Image

Long and razor sharp, they could kill with a single bite. But look a little closer - if you dare - and the back of each tooth is marked with fine ridges. These would have helped the beast to pierce the flesh and then quickly extract its dagger-like fangs, ready for a rapid second attack.

Geminids meteor shower to streak across night sky

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-67658650

Image

The Geminids meteor shower, famous for its multicoloured streaks of light, will peak on Thursday and Friday.

Visible around the world, they can be seen with the naked eye, though check the weather where you are as it will affect visibility.
In perfect conditions, viewers may spot 100 to 120 meteors per hour.

Nasa calls the Geminids one of the year's "best and most reliable annual meteor showers".

Meteor showers are typically caused by a comet, but the Geminids are celestial debris left behind by a rocky asteroid known as 3200 Phaethon.
Meteors occur when the Earth passes through trails of debris from comets or asteroids. As that debris hits our planet's atmosphere, it burns up and creates spectacular streaks of light.

The name Geminids comes from Gemini, the constellation from which these meteors appear to emerge.

The Royal Observatory, Greenwich, says the Geminids are distinctive because of their colours - they can be white, yellow, green, red and blue. It puts this down to the presence of metals like sodium and calcium, adding that this the same effect that is used to make fireworks colourful.

"This meteor shower is just a beautiful night sky event where many shooting stars seem to come from the same area in the sky," said Dr Minjae Kim, an astronomy and astrophysics research fellow at the University of Warwick.
You can see meteors anywhere in the sky, so it's a good idea to be in a dark open space where you can see the night sky for the best chance of spotting this spectacular show.
While the display of 'shooting stars' is already underway, in the UK the peak of the meteor shower is expected to start around 19:30 GMT on Thursday, 14 December.

Dr Kim suggested downloading a stargazing app to help you know where to look.

"If you can find the Gemini constellation first, it's a piece of cake to see the meteor shower," he says.
Other tips from Dr Kim include giving your eyes time to adjust to to the dark, and taking a friend along - that way you can keep your eyes on different parts of the sky.
Don't worry if you don't manage to see the Geminids during their peak. Although this is when they're at their best, the showers will last until 20 December.

The most luminous object ever detected has been spied in the distant Universe.

It's a quasar - the bright core of a galaxy that is powered by a gargantuan black hole some 17 billion times the mass of our Sun.

Known as J0529-4351, the object's power was confirmed in observations by the Very Large Telescope in Chile.
Scientists, reporting in the journal Nature Astronomy, say the black hole has a voracious appetite, consuming the mass equivalent to one Sun every day.

J0529-4351 was actually recorded in data many years ago but its true glory has only just been recognised.
"We have discovered an object which has previously not been recognised for what it is; it's been staring into our eyes for many years because it's been glowing at its brightness for longer than humankind has probably existed. But we've now recognised it, not as being one of the many foreground stars in our Milky Way but as a very distant object," Christian Wolf, from the Australian National University (ANU), told BBC News.
