THE CURSE OF THE CAPTAINCY

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

THE CURSE OF THE CAPTAINCY

Post by The Gooner of Zion »

I've been doing some thinking. What with all this renewed speculation about The Cesc becoming Arsenal captain, I think it would be the wrong move. There seems to be a curse whereby Wenger appoints captains and then they seem to falter or leave. VIEIRA - Left, HENRY - Left, Gallas - dont get me started!

Is it worth risking The Cesc saying adios????????

Welcome Gooner of Zion.

Friendly word of advice for your second thread, put it in the Forum section.

This part of the site is for comments on editorial articles, and it rarely gets visited. The Forum is where the action is.

As you suggest, keep Cesc from the captaincy!

haha...I'm not so sure about a captain's curse! Vieira must have had the job a few years; Henry at least 2; and Gallas is 1 year...and counting.

I would have liked to see Flamini get the armband, but I guess that's doubtful now considering he's now a Milanista  I suspect Gallas will keep the captaincy, as I think he would be a ticking time bomb if he had to endure the humiliation of being stripped of the captaincy...but, I'd be happy for Cesc to be captain. Some players thrive on responsibility, and I think Cesc would take it all in his stride..and lets face it, he's already the symbol, and focal point, of our team anyway 8)

Do you make the rules Quartz?

As far as I know this is the forum for the more serious discussions whilst by nature of it's name the other is for the more general stuff!

Welcome Zion!

despite my misgivings about Gallas, I dont think it would be good for him if he was stripped of the captaincy for it to be given to one of the younger guns.

this happened to Hyppia at Liverpool and I felt a bit embarrased for him.

it could be better to keep Gallas as skip, and try to get a more positive, and constructive, season out of him. With the mad German gone, he is by far the most senior player in the suad, and maybe he's laerned from mistakes made.

If you strip Gallas of the capataincy his toys will certainly fly in all different directions. GOOD!! As it will mean Arsene will have to replace him which is what is needed. Firstly because I think he's a poor captain, a fair weather captain. Secondly Gallas and Toure are a poor partnership IMO. I don't dislike Gallas as a player, but the centre of defence requires a partnership and typically two players with differing strengths. Kolo and Gallas for me are too similar. One of them needs to be replaced and I'd rather keep Kolo.

As for Cesc, I'd give him the armband tomorrow. I've just posted the following on a similar thread on the main forum;
Cesc for captain all the way for me. Lets face it he's led the team for the last 2 years anyway in the way he controls game. He commands respect and he cares. What a fantastic example he would set for the next crop of youngsters aspiring to make the first team. His experience and maturity belie his age. Lets also give him another reason to want to stay at the club for a many more years.

Look what happened so a certain T. Adams when he was made captain at a young age. He went on to become a legend and probably the greatest leader in our history. Cesc is a legend in waiting. Give him the armband Arsene.

Vieira gave us some good years as skipper. For me Henry was already on the decline at the time he was give the captaincy (plus for me he was not captain material). As for Gallas, IMO that was just a mistake from day 1.

P.S. Like Gus I thought this Forum was for posting more serious discussion and for people who wanted to post more of an 'article 'than just a comment. Ed, can you clarify?

Nah, I don't make the rules Gus, as my post says it is a friendly word of advice.

This section is Further Discussion of the editorial articles on the front page, and as my thread on the forum discussed, it is a part of the site that gets a lot less comments than the Forum section.

Gooner.ed explained as much on that post.

The thing is that many new people here start off by posting new threads on this section, and they get very few replies, because the bulk of the traffic is on The Forum.

It has to be explained to people when they join.

Fair do's!

I know what you are saying but I think aslong as it is a relevant and Arsenal related article it can be discussed in here far more seriously than in the General Forum!

Some people just don't like all the nonsense that goes on in there.....and I can understand why!

And then we will all be as one - and go forth and multiply on the further discussion pages of the OnlineGooner forum.

Had it occured to you Quartz that some of us may find the articles on this part of the site less than stimulating  and choose to seek simple pleasure elsewhere  8)

anyway, it's all the forum. think quartzgooner meant to say 'general chat'

think it is a fair statement to say that posts will be more widely read on that part of the forum. as for greater interest in terms of the posts here or there, it very much depends what you're into
