A note on the ongoing destruction of the game
A note on the ongoing destruction of the game
Last night Guardian ran an article on the likely changes in the future of the Champions League tournament (http://www.theguardian.com/football/201 ... gue-revamp).
It is not difficult to decipher that these suggestions will be trying to meet the greed of the "big clubs". The tendency is that we are heading towards an invitation-only tournament, with close to nil real chances of smaller clubs pulling off any surprises. They will effectively be diminishing these chances in a monopoly-like move to ensure the constant money influx into the big clubs as the continental ones begin to feel threatened by the economical imbalance between the domestic leagues, as bottom EPL teams start to receive rewards three times as large as top teams from other big national leagues (the screaming irony of this threat seeing how the english teams are struggling in Europe right now is another discussion).
UEFA is so afraid of "boring games" not attracting as much revenue as Real Madrid-Man U would. Having to face Dinamo Zagreb or some other surprise team now and then, isn't this what football is all about? The ball is round, a game can stand or fall with the mental state of the group, show some spirit for fucks sake. With the system trying to manipulate the appearance of the tournament we are getting closer to a staged show with lots of make-up and the same fake tits all-over rather than an abundance of various sets of tits that look and feel different albeit some better than others. Bottomline is it is a game where you are supposed to be able to end up with any sort of tits at hand.
These changes can most likely happen without any real fan protest since most modern fans are fans of the big clubs anyway. It is no wonder though, that those who truly love the game are finding it increasingly hard to relate to the so-called big tournaments or indeed the big clubs, like Arsenal. The lust of money is forcing the game into inertia. The football itself in "football" is becoming/has become secondary in the competition for the big money. It is more about upholding the current economical power among the most powerful clubs rather than deciding which teams can play the best football, that is win the games.
Now I know that people here care less and less about the CL anyway, and now the reasons for not caring are becoming the more clear, which is a true shame for the tradition of European international tournaments. We are already seeing the british team giving fuck-all about the Europa League since that is not where the money is, the same can be said to a certain degree about the domestic cups. But this is not just about the Champions League this story is but a sidenote to the succesful ongoing campaign to destroy the game by these *word censored*.s who are running our clubs, those who at some point the fans let take over the clubs and now any change can only come from the same fans. The dissatisfied voices are muffled and ambiguous. Hope is half-gone over the horizon.

Re: A note on the ongoing destruction of the game
Just remember though it's not just the clubs who make a lot of money off this, the bigger the matches, the bigger the take, the bigger the cut
Unfortunately football as a whole is becoming less and less a sport and increasingly a huge money making enterprise. Just remember FIFA is a registered international charity and look how much money they have.
There was supposed to be an FA convention on the future of the Cup recently where they were supposedly discussing giving the 4th CL league place to the cup winners, can't see that happening just in case some no mark team ends up in place of the big 4
The illusion that the changes at the top of football will improve things is just that, the entire sporting support structure is corrupted these days and there is not one thing which can be done about it

Not just football either. Cricket is going the same way with the ICC reducing the next world cup to ten teams (would you believe there are exactly ten, money making, Test playing nations) while the developing nations such as Ireland, Netherlands and Afghanistan, all countries in which the game is growing, Afghanistan especially, are left by themselves

The ICC is almost as corrupt as FIFA, and probably even more incompetent.Leyton Gooner wrote:Not just football either. Actually, I'm struggling to think of a sporting governing body that isn't a collection of bent scumbags.

It's almost as if sport is used by the ruling Govts/elite. to control people as a source of distraction/entertainment/programming
Wasn't that all pioneered back in Roman times with Gladatorial events?

It'd be more games strung out over a longer period for a competition we'll never win.

More disgusting snobbery by the cunnts who run the game
They've already made a mess of European competitions and devalued them to fuckery over the past 20 years. Wankers.

Re: A note on the ongoing destruction of the game
I agree it's a systemic fault and the changes has to come from below to be real, but the theoretical power of the fans is greater than the power of the top of football or the system.GoonerMuzz wrote: The illusion that the changes at the top of football will improve things is just that, the entire sporting support structure is corrupted these days and there is not one thing which can be done about it
