I was referring to the fans that only became Leicester superfans this season when they realised they might actually win the league.StuartL wrote:Of course fans would rather watch their team when they are playing well, with the hope of getting a win than watch them playing poorly with a good chance of getting beaten.VoiceOfReason wrote:I'm not sure 'plastics' and 'bandwagon' fans are necessarily the right terms here; 'fairweather fans' seems a little less harsh.
When Man Utd rose to prominence in the 1990s, they absolutely attracted plastics and bandwagoners (mostly from the South). But I don't get the sense that Leicester fans are popping up in Devon and Essex.
It just seems as if every club has a dedicated, hardcore fanbase that will attend rain or shine, regardless of performance - and I guess at Leicester, this stands at around 25K. But to call the other fans 'plastic' or 'bandwagoners' because they only attend several times a season seems a tad unfair.
I support my local club in the Ryman Prem, and have been attending for about 25 years now. If they're involved in promotion charges, naturally I'll be more inclined to fork out the dosh and get myself down there more regularly. To slander (strong term!) Leicester fans for turning up in higher numbers when they're about to win the league seems a little overly critical, to me, as it's the same at every club.
See our own empty seats (already bought and paid for !) as proof.
You make more effort with the expectation of getting something in return - excitement, entertainment, value for money all of which ebb away when the team are shite.
Clubs at the top of the championship will be having the same increase in attendance as they push for promotion / play offs its a natural reaction to teams playing well.
Would you expect them to not turn up Mr T ?

They aren't a big club and when they were knocking around at their level in the second tier for the last decade their ground was 25-40% empty. All of a sudden half of the city are huge football fans who don't have other plans on a Saturday. Can't say I blame them for enjoying this remarkable achievement but they could have sold out their stadium twice over this year - fact is that two-thirds of those fans had no interest in going for the previous decade so yes there is some jumping on the bandwagon.
I don't think anyone is really doing that are they ?

Outstanding achievement. Played their own style, minimum squad turnover, had many chances when everyone would have excused them for buckling but kept going. Beat the big guys and never shirked. Importantly kept another mob from winning.

If you had to sum up, in less than 30 seconds, Arsenal's unnecessarily fancy style of football compared to Leicester's more straightforward and effective style ... is there a better film scene than this?
