UEFA have just started discipline action against the Russian Football Federation so we shall see. Not seen this level of violence since the 80s. I knew Europe was fractured but France don't seem to be able to contain it. If the match was in England we would have had Police on standby to help control the violence

I don't like teams playing a lone striker when the squad is full of decent forwards. Kane took corners and we looked average at best against an average Russian side.

Hard to think what the answer can be for all this trouble - in engerlands case they have lists of fans that are banned from attending football matches, but I have always been sceptical of how that can ever be fully enforced. One would like to believe that other countries also try to come down harsh on their own hooligans, but tbh I am very sceptical of that
Over here I have long believed that violence and robberies in everyday life increase greatly when the economy goes to shit, and I am wondering if this is also directly linked to the resurgence of hooliganism Kicking out countries whose fans misbehave might seem the best option but again I'm not sure that can work cos fans of other countries might wear tops from other countries and try to get those countries in trouble (sure didn't the cockneys do it to the victims in heysel ). More arrests, jail terms (in the countries where the crime has happened) and more fans being sent home is an absolute given, but after that it is hard to know what the authorities can do. One thing is for sure and that it is totally unacceptable that uefa did f.uck all to protect fans inside the stadiums and that is totally on them

Unless a team has a player sent off, I do not agree with a team ever playing a lone centre forward - quite apart from the fact that you need a complete centre forward (is strong, fast, can head the ball, can hold up the ball etc ) and they are very rare, I also feel that it absolutely hands the initiative to the opposition. Many teams feel the need to play 3 central midfielders for various reasons (eg lack of strength, lack of mobility or quality), but there are plenty of formations that can allow them to do that without reverting to one central striker

Again for me, a team has to play to its strengths whatever those strengths are - engerlands strength are in the attacking third where they have the pace of vady and strength of kane and both are goalscorers, so they need to go with that and drop ali, lallana and sterling to bring in vardy, wilshere and one other central midfielder

Agreed images of English women and old guys scared stiff trying to get over a barrier to safety.....no one helping....UEFA are directly responsible for safety within the ground

What Hodgson did well when he first came in was pragmatism. He accepted that England weren't going to go to major tournaments and run rings around good sides, he was willing to play dull stuff and pick average players if they suited his set-up. He would pick Welbeck and Young even when they were not getting much game time at club level because they consistently did a job for his team.

Now he has gone completely backwards and picks Sterling on reputation and crowbars that slob Rooney bang into the middle of the side. England have still got more than enough to get out of this group comfortably but they look like making hard work of it as usual.

Will be interesting to see how many England fans travel to the World Cup, If the club teams merge and get behind Russia the Police will have a job to keep a lid on it.....

This whole violence thing is ridiculous, and i just love the way the British media were jumping on the English fans as being at fault even before the whole story came out, not saying they were completely innocent but they definitely did not seem to start it by all later reports.

I genuinely would not go near Russia for the World Cup, the rise of ultra-nationalism in Russia and its place on their football terraces is rampant these days, and this is coming from someone who can speak a little Russia, enough to get by anyway.

Mind you you wont find me going near Qatar either
