Do they really play the same players and same way? Im not saying that some of the younger players haven't earned a crack but how many games had Dier, Alli and Rooney played together in CM before the tournament?

England's whole system was based on Rooney turning like an oil tanker and spraying passes out from CM, which set the tempo for the whole team's play.

England's biggest attacking outlet was suddenly Kyle Walker, a player who looks dangerous but is hilariously ineffective going forwards.

Kane and Vardy on the wing against Portugal in the warm-up game - madness.

England have got massive mental issues come tournament time but Roy hasn't helped himself one bit in transforming from conservative pragmatist 4 years ago to names out of a hat selection.

It all makes you realise how technically gifted some of our players are, Sanchez, Ozil, Kosc, Bellerin, Ramsey, Monreal for example, far superior to anyone in that England side. Even Giroud, after his performance v ROI, and probably Walcott too, are worthy of mention.

Too many England players are journeymen, who can't even take a player on and beat them. And if they can, eg Barkley, Townsend etc they don't get a look in. Hopefully Wilshere is just unfit, and nothing more.

Ed Hunter The Gooner wrote:You guys have good arguments all of you, but what do you think about this. Why England does so well in qualifications but always fail in the tournament? In qualifications they have basically the same players and same system. Could it be that compared to any other major league the English one is long and very wearing? All other leagues have one to two month winter break while in England they play huge amount of games. It must be difficult for the players to adapt after long season. When season ends they begin long preparations to the tournament and I'd believe it is hard to get back to peak form that is required in the tournament to do well. They are humans after all and not robots. I have always thought about this and could it be that the fuel just runs out after long season?
Quite simply with qualification for this Euro's in particular the amount of teams going through watered down the quality of the groups even more than usual.England being in the first group of seeds strengthens the position even more though frankly we frighten no-one.Sadly like Arsenal being seeded in the CL nobody is going to lose sleep about playing them.

For tournament football being played in the height of summer limited technical teams generally suffer without being able to play tight technical and mobile football.England are in the former group of limited technical ability .High octane pressing football works in the PL and can work in the autumn and winter months against weaker opposition internationally mainly because of the conditions.

A winter break in the PL wouldn't make much difference imo and I have no doubt the big clubs would just play money spinning friendlies abroad anyway!

Typical English media reporting, lets hunt around for anything that will take the spotlight off how embarrassingly bad they were.... i'll bet there were other teams out there celebrating, the French amongst them.

Christ almighty have we become so petty that people are not even allowed to celebrate a rivals defeat without it being turned into a media 'racism/anti-English' frenzy, lets be honest if Wales had been beaten by NI i bet the English team would have been celebrating it :banghead:

No I'm not having that - rooney letting a ball run under his foot, kane taking a free kick that was nearer to the corner flag than the goals, rooney crossing a ball that lands haly way up into the stand, hart letting in a soft daisy cutter..........these are all basic stupid mistakes that cannot be attributed to the manager and it bears out what I said about how the players are every bit (or more) culpable as the manager.

What I will agree with is your point that English players cannot handle pressure and how they should try playing abroad as well - not handling the pressure baffles me because engerland, for a country of it's size, has no real tradition of winning so where does the pressure stem from ?

Off course you are correct as regards individual mistakes, but the energetic pressing of the Iceland team and the fact that we were so disjointed tactically, really think the players became lost, (which is a great surprise as we knew how they would play) no real game plan unlike Iceland...but these are experienced International players and must take the "Lions" share of the blame

Just like watching the Arsenal in round 16 of the CL :D
Made me laugh listening to the outrage (on talksport) about the lack of game plan, the slow possession with no goal threat, square pegs in round holes - all the things we have moaned about for years and been told that we should be grateful and who else is there.

2nd in the group then knocked out - ungrateful bastards those England fans eh ?

Gareth Southgate should be next England manager. If ever there was a man who wants to put a football wrong, right, it's gotta be him.
I don't believe a club manager always makes a good international manager as it's a totally different way of working. He's working in international football and knows how to operate.
On a different note, I have never know a manager resign and then decide to face the press alongside his former employee the next day. A sad and farcical end to the Euros for England.

Personally I think that England need a complete change.

England have done the respectable mid-table English manager thing with McClaren and Hodgson - the job was beyond both of them and they were completely found out.

They've got for the decent foreign name. Capello bombed. No point in giving it to an ex-player out of nostalgia.

What England need is somebody who is going to come in and introduce a completely new way of thinking. There is a stink of failure hanging around England and the new breed are already tarnished.

They need somebody to do what Eddie Jones has done with the rugby side - make the players think differently, make the fans think differently and make the rest of the world think differently about the side. Something akin to what Mark Sampson has done with the women's side, scouring the tires culture left by Hope Powell and introducing a fresh approach at all levels.

Eddie Howe isn't a bad shout for me.

Managing England is the same as having a million pounds. It's a good thing but nowhere near the prestige it once held and stuck in the 70s and 80s.

Our central midfield dynamo fit and raring to go for August
He did absolutely feck all when he came on because he falls over every time he moves faster than walking. If he gets in our side this year lets hope he moves quicker than he did yesterday. Great to see the looks on the 'smug spuds' faces. :barscarf: :barscarf:
