The whole structure needs changing root and branch from grass roots all the way to the top of the FA but the dinosaurs will never change as we are the FA, we are the oldest association in the world and know better than all these young upstarts out there

The attitude of club before country is so prevalent these days, it's not just amongst the players either us fans are guilty of it too, look at the comments on here every time the interlull happens.
Part of the problem for England comes from the fact they never seem to face difficult qualifying groups and unfortunately friendlies against top teams do not prepare you for the intensity of tournament group stages.
I know this will be disputed but i really feel that we have no where near enough English players in leagues overseas, we might have the 'best' and most entertaining league out there but i agree with those saying we are not technically as good as other teams and nor do we have the right mindset, our best players rarely have to face real competition for places in their club teams and even when they do they are still picked for the national squad.
The defeat did not surprise me if i'm honest the past record in knockout stages should have been more than enough warning
