The Brexit shock has given the economy "a good kicking" according to a special set of surveys of businesses taken in the wake of the European Union referendum vote, which suggest the UK economy is now contracting at its steepest pace since the last recession in early 2009.

It only took 4 weeks to have an impact.

To our Oirish friends, it has been said that Dublin could well be a beneficiary of the UK leaving the EU getting more exposure to the Financial Services sector. Given the property market had a tough time after the financial crisis it may be ripe for a boom, especially if Dublin starts to attract the workers that have settled in London and Frankfurt in recent decades.

I hope your government has a more tolerant approach to these "immigrants".

Boeing are relocating their entire European Operation to London.
Aston Martin plan to build a state of the art car plant in Wales.
TVR are bringing their car factory to South Wales.
AVON is bringing its base to the UK.
And Jaguar Land Rover just built a new massive special vehicles ops in Ryton Coventry .. Replacing most of the jobs lost to Peugeot closing and being relocated to Slovakia courtesy of the EU paying for the factory.
Since most of this is not making main news, I thought why not mention it.

Have you actually felt any of the effects of Brexit in your bubble of smug superiority Chippy?

Yup. As I have worked in France and the Netherlands I have pensions in Euros that are now worth about 15% more than they were last month. Having an income in a strong currency while living in a weak economy is good.

I know of 2 people who have been told that they or their spouses are to be moved into an EU country some time in the next 2 years and I know of one lad doing what we used to call a sandwich course who has been told by the merchant bank who was sponsoring him that it is unlikely he will have a job in London when he graduates next summer.

The company my wife works for has had to re-budget as fuel and about 50% of it's goods are denominated in dollars. They are going from decently profitable to just about break even.

2 of our best friends have no pensions and are relying on their house to be able to retire. Anecdotal evidence is that house prices in and around London are dropping like a stone.

Welcome to our world then , all our money was in Britain's greedy bankers hands ( wife was made redundant by the RBS ) and unlike the ones that put their money abroad in Iceland we didn't get a bail out. We had to leave London many years ago because of the ridiculously inflated prices and all we have is our house to sell and live on . It's tough we took a gamble with our money and lost . But we get on and live with it.

That's the thing, a lot of the reporting that's going on now wont feed through to the economy perhaps until next year. I accept 1 month of data isn't much to go by, but there is no doubting that the referendum hasn't had a positive effect on our country either socially or economically.

By the way the bankers did and still do pay a ridiculous amount of tax into the exchequers coffers, if the investment banks move away from London it isn't only the city slickers who will suffer (in reality a lot of them will just move with a job). It's too easy to blame the bankers for the financial crisis but that's the fault of the media. When you actually drill down and question people about what actually caused the crash in 2007, they don't really know.

Not really my wife and I have learned to live with it and get on with our lives. I just assumed that as you bought it up it was now a cause for concern which it wasn't before.

I posted this earlier but somehow it got on the Trump thread. Possibly the IPA last night might have taken some effect. But really it belongs on here .
Since the end of world war two the general public has taken less and less interest in the whole thing. General election turn outs have steadily declined and the elite have had free reign to do things to suit themselves. I used to live in London where I was born but like many others had to leave when I could no longer afford it. Did I jump or was I pushed ?. However living outside the capital bubble I have learned how another percentage of the country view our esteemed leaders and it doesn't matter which hat they are wearing, the population feel totally disenfranchised ignored and disconnected from the whole process. They don't see any real benefit from the whole thing and the referendum was their chance to change things and hopefully get things better in their working life. Perhaps they might get a bit more money for their milk, perhaps the fish stocks in the sea might recover if the hoovering of Spanish and French ships was curtailed. Maybe just maybe someone might start to listen if they were on the receiving end of a bloody nose. That's why they all voted to leave because they saw it as their last chance. They have seen their way of life totally change , agriculture is not a big thing in Westminster, in Strasbourg it is though, providing the French are growing it , the farmland is being taken for housing estates to give the big city overspills places to live and acres of good arable land are now home to swathes of French owned solar panels . Has any politician addressed these questions either in a budget statement or even the run up to June 23rd.? Only one, Farage did and all the other somewhat distasteful parts of his party got swept under . The government have now got to be seen to carry Brexit through or else we could end up with a very unsavoury parliament at the next election. Lastly don't kid yourselves, all you people calling them names and questioning their brainpower, they will treat you with as much contempt as they can muster . Politicians and the city have split this country and the uneducated bumpkins as you call them are not happy and feel that they have been taken for a ride and they certainly do not appreciate the insults.
