All roads lead to Arsenal

Post by Herd »

Ever since I was a kid I always found a way or an excuse to take a route on the way to somewhere via the Old Ground our beloved Highbury.
I wasnt the only one because you always bumped into people you knew who did the same !
I've noticed that this is still strong in me , I live in hampstead I have dinner in EC1 drop the Japanese off to their Hotel in Southampton Row but despite the fact I could get home easier and quicker by other routes I find myself on a 19 bus and then a 43 past the new ground ! b4 popping in to the enkel for a beer !
Madness !

Sadly I've always done the same. Whenever I was working in the City or West End I'd take a route back to N12 via Highbury/Ashburton Grove. I've driven there on a summer Sunday afternoon just to see if anything was going on

Every game over since the move we've drank over in the Gunners or the BOF just so we can walk back past Highbury on the way to the Conglomerates Legobowl. :D

I still think it is shameful that we left THOF and I do not consider it in any way a good thing. :(

We've had Highbury memories threads before, but if anyone wants to post some of those great historic pics (or any personal pics) of Highbury on this thread, please do so. 8)

I used to live in Finsbury Park and it was amazing how many times a quick trip to the local shop or to post a letter required me to just take a quick walk past the place. If it was a nice Spring or Summer evening, I'd suddenly suggest a stroll round the area to the wife and it always needed to go past or along Avenell Road.

I always cast a mournful glance down Conewood Street and Elwood Street when I'm on a bus down Blackstock Road :(

I did fluke a little wander into 'Highbury Square' ( :censored: ) last summer. I walked along what was the Clock End. You could still get a sense of the place, but it was so fucking sad.

And with that fucking garden locked up, I couldn't even walk onto the 'pitch' :banghead:

love walking past highbury, even with a tinged sadness it feels like a part of the old Arsenal lives on walking past that east stand frontage :barscarf:

Always walk by the Home of Football when in North London.. It feels like visiting a shrine or sacred place...First time I saw it post the move was around Halloween 2006. The building work had begun and in the dark the East Stand looked ghostly.
Hated leaving Highbury but at the time felt it was a necessary evil..Believed the spin about it taking us to that higher level..

I'm not ashamed to say that I still well up a bit when I walk past the old entrance to the West Stand where my old man took me from the late 70s to the mid-80s, and the entrance to the North Bank where I spent so many afternoons with my mates. Just brings back so many memories of a great and happy childhood and would give anything to go back and do it all in there one last time

Walked that entrance when there was 57,000 in the ground including those sitting on the roof for the opening day game vs the Mickeys in the late 80s, and in midweek when 15,000 were there for a 2nd leg League Cup tie against Doncaster when we'd already mopped up 3-0 in the first leg. So glad I got to take my eldest a couple of times in the farewell season when he was a pup because he can at least know what I'm on about when I reminisce like an old fart.

Loved the old place so much. Still hurts that we'll never play there again

So many memories but this is the last picture I took at Highbury, can't remember the opponent but was in farewell season. The quality is a bit crap but was only taken on an old Samsung mobile!

What I loved most was the proximity to the pitch and the players, have so many memories of being so close to the players you could almost reach out and touch them.

I pass the soulless bowl probably 8/9 times a week if doing work in crouch hill or archway heights or if just cutting up around the back cos Holloway Road is fucked and lately I won't even look up at the ground, yet I take every possible chance to drive along avenell rd, stop off and walk in and around The Home of football at least once a week, one of my favourite places to stop is midway down avenell road hill with the ground to the left, if I close my eyes I can still see the thousands marching towards the old girl, memories I'll never forget

Even better memories surely has to the walk through the old gate outside Arsenal tube entrance looking up at the cannon up the stairs through the turnstiles entering the standing north bank west side, walking the gangway to your standing position week in week out, what a buzz.

I wouldn't worry about her. It was ten minutes walk to the ground and she would always wonder why it took me so long to get home afterwards or why I had to leave so early. "It's the crowds, darling. It takes ages to get in and out of the ground." Funny how she never seemed to clock that there were so many pubs around my route to and from the match.
