As a country, and also as individuals, Britain still has money in its pocket to spend on new cars, clothes, holidays etc - the European countries that are already struggling big time cant afford to lose our spending power by not trading with us.

We have no trade negotiators, and we cannot negotiate a new deal until we leave. The recent Canadian deal took 8 years, is much smaller than any deal we might do and doesn't cover services, the most important part of the UK economy. The rest of the EU might export more to us but in percentage terms it is small. 40+% of our exports go to the EU. About 5% of EU exports come to us. In addition only 3 EU countries have a surplus with us Germany, France and Netherlands. Yet the deal has to be agreed with all 27 countries. The most optimistic forecast I have seen of doing a deal with the EU is 10 years.
