My apathy towards the game (and AFC in particular) has now stretched to the point that I don't even bother posting on match threads (regardless of performances) simply because I couldn't give two fcuks I'll partake in generalized discussions, but after that I cant be arsed cos the team and club are living in a groundhog/deja vu universe, so on here we keep going over the same old ground

Not sure if I agree with you guys tbh - I have felt for a while now, that under the surface hooliganism is bubbling away and is just waiting to explode again, and it is how it is dealt with then that will dictate the future. In the past 12 months we have seen Gooners fighting Gooners inside stadiums more than once, and this to me suggests that as a society we are going back to violence to sort out disputes.
I have always felt that (to some degree) hooliganism is linked to the economy - when the country is going well everyone is happy and contented, but when it starts to go to shit, all this resentment and sense of entitlement comes to the fore again and often in the form and violence. It is my opinion that brexit will have caused a big divide in the uk people which, I believe, will see a surge in racism that will affect every aspect of society including football

Good points and many studies have shown the correlation between hooliganism and economic / social situations. I remember how hooliganism all but dried up in the 90's because everyone was off their tits and all loved up on E.

remember watching the travelling gooners and wanky leicester fans having a row over the segragation at full time in august. some rubbish being chucked from one side to the other, all lads involved in their late teens/early twenties. these lads grow up watching them hooligan flicks and get ideas, and unfortunately for them they don't have a means of letting off this rage and adolescent violence that previous generations did at football.

that creates a sort of resentment where any mild fracas is jumped on and they will try to exploit it. the poor policing/stewarding and overall setup at west ham will encourage more and more of these likes of fans to try and have a go, now that there is a reputation there, it will be ever harder for them to kick it out.

i will say most fans these days are smart enough not to try acting like knobs in grounds, most of them rational enough not to start on shirters or way fans in pubs which is something you couldn't say 20 years ago, let alone 30. progress is being made on the whole and hopefully silly incidents like the one we discussed at west ham don't slow down the inevitability of safe standing being brought back into the game for those that want to stand, have a sing song and act like responsible louts, instead of irresponsible ones
