tough times for non whites in 70s britain , i remember getting abuse at games because of my irish accent but at least i could keep my mouth shout , one of the great things about the arsenal back then was the likes of the NF and other groups never got a hold of the crowd at highbury the way they did at chelsea,millwall etc. people can moan all they want about the hooligans but the arsenal fans have a lot to thank people like the bear and the herd for this not happening.

I would have put West Ham in there too, but do you remember a certain Clyde Best!...I do, and he took loads of shit...

He was a strong, powerful player with the skills of the traditional English centre forward, tough to dispossess when he had the ball and good in the air. He made his debut for West Ham in a 1–1 home draw against Arsenal on 25 August 1969 at the age of 18. His first goal for the Hammers came during League Cup competition, in a 4–2 win against Halifax Town, on 3 September 1969. Best played 218 games and registered 58 goals for West Ham over 7 seasons between August 1969 and January 1976.[3]

Football was like every trade, it was a closed club and black players had to work fucking harder to get spots in teams, bit like black managers, how many black managers do we have in England....?

Didn't mention west ham because they always seem to have a lot of non white supporters but I do remember Clyde best , Wba and the so called three degrees got awful abuse everywhere they played which must have been terrible for them personally.

We used to play blacks v whites at school in the 80s. Of course going to a south London comprehensive, it was us white lads that were heavily outnumbered. .

And as for racism, without wishing to dismiss what others have been through ... the worst racism I have seen or heard is still is blacks against blacks or blacks against Asians. But you don't hear about that so often.

Racism was not only rampant in the 70's is was instilled into the very fabric of the country !
I was brought up in a society that confused me ,Policemen and all authority figures were white.
Everyday racism was normal , even school teachers were racist until I moved to Kent and then there simply were no black people but the very few Asian were scandalously abused but not in my school as it was 100 pct white so I didn’t see any .
It confused me that white people were happy to imitate and dance to black music ,but not happy to mix with them .
Football at Arsenal always had loads of Black faces off the pitch and gradually some on it .
I've never heard anyone getting abused for bieng Irish at Arsenal as there were scores of Irish - English in the region and many of the pubs were Irish , as much and perhaps even more than in Kilburn, in Holloway/Archway/Kentish town were massively Irish ,still are but I accepted that it existed .
I hate the thought of a white v blacks football game its segregation !
