Players who understand what it means

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Of the more recent players have to give a mention to our full backs Nutty Nigel Winterburn and Lee Dixon always committed to the cause and hated losing.Good Arsenal men in my book.

Ever since his "Arsene deserves the right to decide when he leaves" bollox, I have fuck all respect left for him.
Yep posted similar the other night it's cringeworthy at times his commentary on games as well tries to sound more intelligent than he actually is.

Liam Brady and David O'Leary as well knew what it was about to play for Arsenal.
And similarly I lost all respect for O'Leary when he ran up the pitch at Leeds hysterically celebrating (more or less) stopping us from winning the league and handing it to Manure. The fucking plank. :x

Yes talking more as purely a player.

O'Leary as a manager left a lot to be desired totally agree.Think he thought he was going to become a great manager and became very arrogant.

Agreed. A shame really because as a kid him and Chippy were my heroes. But then I had read that many of O'Leary's Oirish teammates disliked him because he was arrogant and aloof.

There was talk at the time of him having an axe to grind because we wouldn't extend his contract for one more year and he left for Leeds. He must have forgotten that we employed him for 20 years and could have released him years before 1993.

Anyway, Charlie Nicholas is another I'm adding to the list of blokes who know what it means.

Well said mate. He is a bit before my time too but I love Frank McLintock.

For me Frank is the blueprint when it comes to Arsenal players and he stands alone. The 1971 double was the best of the lot because it was done in an era when football was at its toughest and most competitive.

Of course I also love the likes of Adams and Vieira as captains but they came after McLintock. Frank was the first of his kind at the club and he sets the standard for the type of leader that all Arsenal teams should have (but will never have again  ).

And while I am not a fan of statues for players ... if you are gonna have any at a club like Arsenal then its disgusting that there isnt one of Frank McLintock

How many would actually physically have a tear up after a game for the club, like the Fairs Cup game? That era of players knew what Arsenal meant to World Football let alone English football.

Merse for me,I know he gets some grief on here but he knows what it meant to wear the shirt.

Interesting that many of the players mentioned were from the Bertie Mee era.

Even when we weren't doing so well we had class and fought for the club.

George Armstrong, Frank Mc, Pat Rice, GG, John Radford, Charlie, Bob Wilson et al.

as a manager the way Terry Neil spoke about us was class "Once an Arsenal man, always an Arsenal man". 8)
