Martin Hayes - The Glory Years

or

David Hillier - Better than Vieira?

A winner at boro if my increasingly dodgy memory serves me right, , mind you that goal was at least a decade before the ones you're on about

Apologies lads - clearly I meant that hayes played a big part in the 89 league title win, but written in haste meant that I listed the wrong league title

Yeah he got the goal in a crucial win at Boro as Greengooner mention ... and as we all know, every goal counted that season as well as every point.

But while not meaning to be pedantic, Hayes' biggest contribution was to the 86/87 season really. That season will always been one of my favourites.

I vaguely remember he was a good player for Ipswich. I felt we ruined his career by signing him, as all he did was rot in the reserves for three years after his initial half-season. He went on to QPR and had a few years there, although they were on the way into the doldrums.

He wasn't the best player technically, but Augies right in that he scored some crucial goals leading to the 89 title

Memorably a late 1-0 away win at Middlesborough, which put us in pole position with only 3 games to go.

Was our top scorer In 87 or 88 I recall.

I think half his goals for us were penalties.

He had a half-decent season, but his career seemed to slide quickly downhill.

I remember some games where he could barely trap the ball (but I saw Merson have some games like that as well).

Hayes was the first player to hit 20 league goals for the club in the '80's, I think it was 85/86 season. He also scored a corker against the French national team in a friendly in 1989.

I played against him when we were both youngsters (cue the 'laces in the ball' jokes)

What were the 1950's like, Spuddy? Good times? With the war being over and all? :rubchin:
