Wenger wants to win the PL or CL more than anything.
When he says top 4 is a success, or dresses up last 16 exits and 'getting out of the group stages', its just him spinning the situation. But deep down he wants go go further.
Sorry Wilson but that is just bollocks!! What have you been watching for the last 10 years?
If Wenger wanted to win the PL or CL more than anything then he would spend more of the money available to him, he have more leaders in the dressing room and he would have tried harder to keep his best players instead of selling the to rival clubs. He would also have freshened up the coaching staff and the medical staff.
And most of all he would abandon his fucking philosophy. In his own words: ''I'm a prisoner of my own policy'' Thats not the words of someone who wants to win ''more than anything''
The only time Wenger does anything different ... like changing the way we defend or signing a player in January ... is when top 4 is under threat.
When Wenger plays Bendtner, Denilson, Eboue, Sanogo, he actually thought he could win with these players. You see these players and must think Wenger isnt serious about winning. But the reality is, Wenger actually thought he was a brilliant enough manager to win on the cheap.
So when you interpret lack of investment, and dithering in the transfer market as that of a man not wanting to win. You miss the point of Wenger being so arrogant and full of himself, that he actually believes he is/was good enough to win on the cheap.
Wenger is desperate to win the league, and always has been. He doesn't want to finish 4th every year anymore than the fans dont want to. But where as most Arsenal fans are pragmatists, Wenger is an optimist who has an irrational belief in players like Denilson, Diaby, Almunia.
"Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is not actively looking to strengthen his first-team squad in the January transfer window."
I'm sorry but if this is to be believed then Groundhog day is upon us again. We'll fail to make a signing in a weak area and on 1st Feb our main player for that position will get injured, resulting in our not being quite good enough once again.

We both know it is true, Spuddy. Every season, year after year, the same avoidable fucking mistakes kills our season.
to be honest there only 2 things that Wenger needs to do transfer wise - get Sanchez and Ozil on new contracts (if not then we are seriously fucked because the rest of our squad is mid table PL level), oh and Wenger please try not to sign a new contract yourself
I just hate the clubs and Wengers rigid and narrow minded thinking. Sanchez on Ozil north of 250k is a new norm in football. Its the going rate for elite players these days. Clubs are earning more for match day revenue, sponsorship and tv deal, so the margins are still the same.
I hear Wenger talk about 'wage structures' and 'being financially responsible' and Im thinking oh fuk not again. This isnt going to be another Nasri-Cesc situation is it? Although it would be worse, as Nasri and Cesc were still boys in their early twenties, whilst Ozil and Sanchez are at their peak.
This is the thinking of a dinosaur. Why he is always caught behind the times. Other clubs and managers get out of the blocks quick and indentify new trends in football. Whilst Wenger clings to the old days.
Fuk Sake Wenger, move on. I know 250k a week sounds like a big number. But it is the going rate for players these days. You need to move with the times.

I totally agree with you about Wenger's extreme levels of arrogance.
When someone says he would ''sign up to finish 2nd for the next 20 years'' though, then those are not the words of someone who wants to win more than anything.
Wenger's own agendas come before everything else .... but then maybe in his world his agenda is the best thing the club best so that fits with what you're saying.

Agree once again.
Even if the prices are inflated, the club have no moral ground to stand on to not to pay these inflated prices when they charge inflated prices for tickets.

the Sanchez/Ozil situation all comes back to Wenger's ego once again.
He will not allow any player to earn more than him.
If we were to pay Sanchez for example £250,000 per week then he would expect a salary of at least £12 million a year as well

"Gunners boss Arsene Wenger believes the club's "values and ambition" will be more significant than money in convincing Sanchez to stay. (Guardian)
So what Values and Ambitions would that be then - To rip off the fans, give the owner an annual bonus for wearing a Bad Wig and scramble for 4th in the prem (yet again).
Is it true that Wenger stands for Despotic, Deluded Fool in Pyscho-world?

I agree with this. I read today that sanchez and ozil want 250 grand a week. They shouldn't even be thinking about it. Just fucking give it them. They are two of the best players in the league and arguably our two only world class players. ( I think koscielny is but many dont) if Rooney toure and countless others earn that then surely sanchez and ozil should. WENGER PAY THEM WHAT THEY DESERVE

Wenger probably sees that as justification for not offering such a high wage with those players now squad players on huge wages.
If it is true that Wenger wont allow a player to earn more than him, then thats horrible.
Ferguson was always paid less than Ronaldo and Rooney back in the day.
Moreover, how would Wenger go about bringing Messi to the club? Lets say all other obstacles are non-existent - Messi wants to come, is out of contract and wont cost anything, does Weger block the deal because Messi would be earning more than him?
This is where Wenger truly lets himself down. Even when the team is doing well, and there is an opening to at least get behind him a little. These old habits come back and just leave you exasperated.
I don't think he is concerned about players earning more than him. I think that's a bit far fetched myself.
I think he just doesn't agree that a footballer is worth that kind of money and I'd have to say I agree with him in many respects. Where I don't agree with him though is that a manager is worth it!
There's no doubt that he's a complete hypocrite in that respect but I don't think he is actually bothered about himself not being the biggest earner.

But he is quite happy to sanction Giroud and Walcott on approx £130,000 -£140,000 per week when Alexis & Ozil are twice the players, genuine quality that would earn what they are apparently requesting at other clubs.
