How unusual that a young player with much potential should become pap under wenker's (mis) tutelage....

Chambers & the Ox are prime examples of his ability to truly nurture young talent so they lose all sense of self, lose all confidence and become shyte
Remember how he destroyed AA23. I recall at the time we signed him he started very brightly. Augie went so far as to say AA23 was the closest thing we had to a new Bergkamp up to that point - and he was right. When played in the right position AA23 had real vision and fantastic technical ability.

By the time Wenger was done with him he was a wreck. :|
Remember watching him in the world cup against Spain...he was MOTM.....4 goals at Anfield....then played out of position...lost confidence....lost fitness through over eating.....then never recovered....
Not all down to Wenger of course the player must shoulder responsibility also...but yes had high hopes when he joined

Mr.Bard's been checking family album on facebook... ...Excellent. Been a rough few months for us lot, sister was a bit off, but her period started so that was a big relief...for me anyway. Valentines day was a bit tetchy to, (its actually mothers day aswell up here) so you can well imagine it was like a powder keg ready to explode. That's family for you. Enough about me, how's the fruit 'n' veg stalls doing, I bet you're all minting it in, with this Brexit malarkey, at least you can sell any shape of cucumber and bananas now, bloody foreigners telling us what's best, but not for much longer eh ?

Been a lot of talk about abuse in football in the 70' and 80's. Not brilliant and lots of people have a lot to answer for. I remember my dad managing the the junior team I played for in the 70's, he once pulled me off at half-time..... but we did go on to win. That's life.

Big game this weekend, hoping for a point, but it'll probably be no points, we'll see. Have a good Christmas and a happy new year, :cheekkiss:
Would appreciate your recollections of players who have shared the red & white colours of our clubs.

I can think of Alan Hudson, Lee Chapman, Lee Dixon and Steve Bould -any particular memories of these players, or any others who have represented both clubs ?

Great players all of the above mentioned. Alan Hudson has been in ill heath again. I hear he was improving again though. Chapman,Dixon and Bould were fantastic in the early 80s for us but obviously went on to much bigger things with Arsenal....maybe not so much Chapman to be fair. Two of my favourite players to play for Arsenal then on to Stoke City were Brian Talbot and John Devine. They both did well but Devine was plagued with injury, but on his day he was ace, imo.

Pennant should of been a top top player and I think he wasted his talent. Woulda, coulda, shoulda, honestly, he should of been up there, again, just my opinion.

George Eastham also, obviously know of him but don't remember him playing, he scored in the 72 league cup final v Chelsea. Brain Moore said the old man has done it...in his commentary. Older fans than me say Eastham was a great thinker and should of been playing 10 years in the future than rather the 60s or 70s.

I love 70s and 80s footy, some great players from them era's . Its nice to reminisce :-) ....PS Sebastian Svard also...had him on loan 2004'ish....and also Steve Sidwell...... :D

Didn't recall Devne or Talbot playing for Stoke,so thanks for the information.

Did you know Stanley Matthews played for Arsenal 11 during the war years ?

Pennant was a waste of talent, which car wash is he working at now ?

Didn't know that about Sir Stan, that's interesting and Pennant was kicking up another fuss a couple of weeks ago about his wages he gets paid for playing in the Indian super league by his team...things never change for him. I remember Talbot signing for 250k (I think) for Arsenal from Ipswich in the late 70's, good player and the Irish lad Devine would of been another great but he got some bad injuries along the way.

John Devine set the trend to have a wag - he married Miss Ireland (might even have been Miss World, I can't quite remember )

Agree about Pennant, he certainly had more natural talent then Walcott.

Interesting post too mate.

Football in the top echelons has literally eaten itself Herd...so you are not alone...That; coupled in Arsenal's case with the likes of Wenger who has turned a once Classy, Family Orientated Club into a Cash Cow Machine for Tourists and Only those who can afford ever increasing prices for a brand of football that is now out-moded and mostly uneventful AND which is a huge distance from what we once were and stood for.....means a growing lethargy is destroying the excitement, care and passion of what once was not only a tradition of the working classes the hub of the local community.

I am not for a moment putting it all on Wenger's shoulder's because this is a symptom of a world and society more interested in quick fix satisfaction than long standing traditions and 'quality', but he has played more than his fair share in the demise of of Arsenal FC from a truly great and loved club to something plastic and without heart.

It hurts and greatly saddens me, especially when I think back to when I went to my first Arsenal game at the age of 13 - Jeeezusss I get goosebumps and shivers just remembering it. I truly despise what Arsenal (and Football) has become, but know it is now out of our hands no matter what we say or do...it is all about "Money/Profit', with Trophies being a happy coincidence should they be had.

He's allowed to wash them but not drive them.

But on a serious note Pennant had 'Talent & skills' - He was not 'looked after' in the same way the likes of walnutt & the ox are today - they not only have agents, accountants etc, but the club ensure that they invest & spend their money wisely....It's a whole different ball game as they. :?
