Should Gilberto be the next Arsenal Captain? (4/7)

Post by gooner.ed »

Usual thread starter… Gilberto has been confirmed hasn’t he? And he is skippering Brazil to boot. Think there is a belief that we played as more of a team when Thierry wasn’t on the pitch last season. Is that true? If so, was it down to Gilberto’s leadership qualities? Be interesting to see who skippers the boys in the early part of the season as I can see Gilberto missing the early games. Probably Mad Jens, as that’s what happened last season from memory. But maybe Kolo should be appointed vice-captain as he’ll be around a lot longer all being well.

I think Gilberto will do his best to captain the Arsenal, he also seems to take a lot of intrest on the younger players off the field they all speak highly of him, plus he is also now captain of Brazil so he must enjoy the extra responsibilty

thumbs up from me :D

Also agree with Kolo as vise-captain

Cesc Fabregas - Too young and captaincy will put too much pressure on him.
What about Tony Adams?

And they chose him over Paul Davis?

Although Gilberto is a good Captain, I have to say i would prefer Kolo. If you are Captain you should play all the time unless injured, And Kolo can. But if you make Gilberto Captain you will narrow the options in Midfield.

Thats true about Gilberto being captain limiting the midfield options. I'd be happy with him or Kolo as captain though.

Am I mistaken in thinking Ljungberg has captained us a couple of times too?

Gilberto did well in the absence of Titi and he is a good choice for the Captain.

I was lucky enough to see Gilberto captain our youth team in the penalty shoot-out win at Doncaster, which followed his last-minute equaliser - football back to its basics. It's Gilberto for me - he has that TA6 ability to be low profile to the fans but the team know he's around.

Who should be the new club captain

I think everyone would agree that Kolo Toure is a fantastic player, and I suspect extremly loyal and committed to Arsenal. He'll make a great captain one day and probably a great vice captain now. But, I think it has to be Gilberto now. He was superb most of last season. Great passion and work ethic, and scored some crucial goals. He is a player we don't want to lose even though Fabegras in the midfield is pure class we need the efforts of Gilberto in their too. :P

My first choice was Kolo but now i'm thinking Captain Bert really is the best option.

The old cliche about needing leaders all over the pitch (regardless of whether theyre wearing the armband or not) for a team to be successful is true in my book. And while some players (like Gilberto) maybe need the armband to bring out those leadership qualities, others (like Toure) will play that captain-like role with or without the armband. So by choosing Kolo we might (might) have been effectively limiting ourselves to one leader instead of two - if that makes any sense at all!

Now if we could just get Willie to shut the fcuk up and show his capabilities to lead and encourage, and if Cesc can continue to develop his ability to take a game by the scruff of the neck then maybe we might be on our way!
