Shame!!
Shame!!
Newcastle's Joey Barton has been jailed for 6 months for assault and affray.
The judge told him it was a "violent and cowardly act".
Deserves it if you ask me, he is a thug. Does this mean he cant play for newcastle now for the next 6 months?

Ah so the thug Barton gets his just desserts after all, about time after apparentely attacking a team mate in training and stubbing a cigar out in the eye of a trainee a few years ago as well. Unfortuantely 6 months inside means he will be out in 2 or 3 so will be back in time for the new season unless Newcastle sack him (as they should in my opinion) but i doubt that will happen. He might end up someones bitch in there though

My memory might be playing tricks on me, but I recall that a lot of people were saying last summer who they would like us to buy and high up on the list came.......Joey Barton!!!
He comes from a rough background - his brother is already doing time for murder - so I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise that he has occasional "lapses". Good footballer though.....and one I still wouldn't have minded in an Arsenal shirt!!
Wrong though that the timing of this means that all he'll miss is a holiday and not matches!

Maybe that is the biggest punishment for him though that he misses his time off?MK Gould wrote:My memory might be playing tricks on me, but I recall that a lot of people were saying last summer who they would like us to buy and high up on the list came.......Joey Barton!!!

I agree decent footballer but I would rather not have anyone near our side that stubs out cigars in team mates faces!
Arsehole of a man!
Well deserved!

I have to say that I disagree with this statement. I firmly believe that everybody is entitled to fair and equal treatment within our legal system. Provided that his sentencing has not purposely been delayed to coincide with the close season then it is fair enough.

In another case in Manchester, he is due to stand trial accused of assaulting his former Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo in a training ground incident in May last year that effectively ended his career with the club. He has pleaded not guilty.
Fuck me. The lad is a violent lout. With a brother who emdedded an axe into another lad's skull, only because he is black, I hope he stays in there longer......Someone must have enough sense to throw the keys to his cell away and let that scum rot in there forever

The press reports in Manchester was the assault on the training ground happened when Faye turned his back after a row. Also, the team mate Barton stubbed a cigar out in the eye was only 15 years old.
The lad is a coward and a scrote.
Barton doesn't have enough class to play for Leeds, let alone Arsenal.

6 months for assault and affray seems like a lot to me. And what was he doing in Crown Court for those charges, I thought stuff like that was dealt with at Magistrates court where the top punishment is 6 months isn't it? Cantona was up for assault wasn't he and only got community service. Whilst he does deserve to be punished for breaking the law personally I'd be disapointed to get 6 months for affray and assault.
surely smashing someone up shoud be more seriously punished, not lessened. if he had killed the bloke we would be saying hang him, but is it not a fine line between seriously hurting someone and killing them.
IMO If the intent is to hurt someone which it clearly was then 6 months is far too lenient!

Magistrates can send people to jail for no longer than a year. With Barton's history of violence, let alone his families, I think 6 months is too lenient.
Technically he was out on bail after the incident with Dabo, so getting into another fight on similar charges should have resulted in him either getting a longer sentence or not being released on bail until all charges were dealt with.

Not to my knowledge they can't. 6 months was the max in magistrates court when I was in the job.Ras Dam wrote:Magistrates can send people to jail for no longer than a year. With Barton's history of violence, let alone his families, I think 6 months is too lenient.

Yes. He has no self control and there are too many idiots in this country that won't keep themselves to themselves. He could easily turn on an aggresive autograph hunter or someone that speaks to his girlfriend or what not. He's far too volatile.
Time in jail isn't going to help him but it does protect society from him. Anger management and community service would have been better suited but as this government isn't too fussed with the causes of crime, they should have sent him down for longer. 3 months in jail isn't going to change anyone.
