Do we really need another striker?

Post by GoonerBen »

call me crazy but... At the end of last season I felt reasonably convinced that, despite our problems infront of goal we didn't really need to sign another striker because of the fact that our 2 frontline strikers had missed a fair chunk of the season each and we'd still got by.

TH14 leaving created a massive need for a striker which Wenger more or less met immediately by signing Eduardo who, though having come from a smaller league looks like he could be very very good. At the moment we have in our forward line:
Van Persie
Adebayor
Eduardo
Bendtner
Walcott (being groomed on the wings but he can still play up front and thats where hes definately gonna end up in a season or so)

Wenger has more or less made committments to all these players that they're gonna get games this season so if a big signing did happen (which considering Wenger's record is almost certain NOT to happen) one of them would miss out.

To be honest I reckon RVP is easily worth 20ish goals a season, Ade can get 15 if he sorts his finishing out abit, Eduardo 15/20, bendnter hopefully 10? Added to a few more goals from our more experienced and settled midfield (than last year) and I reckon we don't need (and definately won't get) another big signing up front that everyone seems to be shouting for, all we really need is a winger

Arsene knows...

For me the maths say we need another striker .. Henry - Alialadaire (??) & baptista/reyes have gone . In we have the new guy & Bendtner . So for me 3 out & 2 in so far means we need another. I don't really see the midfield adding many more then last year either... Hope I'm wrong on that but there's nothing to suggest we will start banging them in from midfield as opposed to last year.

Agree with the first fella about goal scoring winger .. Maybe we have one in RVP already . him left midfield & two up front ?? Would expect him to get goals from that position.

I take your point but we are talking about the premiership for 2007/2008. You've mentioned you're happy with the 5 strikers that you listed . RVP & Adebayor seem in my book fairly proven quality players. We then have a player who's never played in the premiership & two 18-19 year olds(one of which also hasn't played in the premiership ) God forbid we have a few injuries up there to senior players ( RVP & Adebayor are probably about 23 years old ) & we are in a very poor position cover wise. That's a massive gamble to take into a new season for me .

also needed is our centre halfs to get there heads on corners and free kicks ( and our corners to beat the first man). I think we need a striker about 25-26 who can add some maturity to the front line! one who is proven in both Europe and the premiership! but where do we find him?

would be nice 2 score from corners alrite.. but i do feel we hav enough forwards and its up 2 rest of team 2 get there share of goals, last year it was bottom 6 teams not top 6 that was r downfall.. its up 2 the players 2 be up 4 these matches as well as man u chavs and scousers

Bedtner totally unproven in premiership & didn't set the world alight in the championship last season either. Theo wonderful talent & pace but only 1 goal so far for the club. Ade great workrate but prolific he aint. Eduardo proven in croatian league but a big step up here and at the very least will need time to settle. That leaves RVP who is a goalscorer but who will have to cope with being the main striker this season and that will bring extra pressure from the fans, the opposition & probably even himself. We need a proven striker, a top quality winger and if Djouru goes out on loan or if that moaning git gallas leaves then we need a centre half - anyone who thinks otherwise is only fooling themselves and I'm including Wenger & the clueless board in that

I agree with GoonerBen and TheOne2Smooth.
We have a strong forward line, plenty of cover and also plenty of variety. Some more experience would be useful (Anelka?) but there's plenty of goals there I think.
But One2Smooth is spot on,we have not replaced Pires and really missed him last season. Rosicky is not a natural winger I dont think, he would suit the Bergkamp role much better

So out of the five.......

3 have never scored in the Prem!

2 have never played in the Prem!

The oldest is 23 (I think)

None have consistently been a first choice partner for the other guy who left (cant remember his name)

One is aged 18 and is deemed to small and not developed enough to play upfront

I think the answer is yes! Another striker is needed!
