Springsteen at the Grove

Post by MK Gould »

What a night..... 8) !!! Started with lovely nosh a Il Bacio on Blackstock Road then a slight detour past the East Stand, Highbury for the benefit of my friends from Stoke. Into our seats for 7.35pm. Good job as The Boss came on stage only 10 mins later. Seats behind the goal at the North End not good as stage partly obscured by the sound stage. No problem....helpful Arsenal Steward let us go onto the pitch (which is what I wanted to do all along, but missus wouldn't go for it!).

Imagine, standing there on the hallowed turf (albeit that it was covered by plastic....but you know what I mean!). Stands appear smaller from the centre circle.

Imagine the scene. The Grove, with people standing at their seats. The Grove with people standing on the pitch....smoking....drinking copious quantities of expensive lager!

We also saw what I'd inagine were the first people ever to be thrown out of a gig at the Grove - two 40 somethings who should have known better. Could hardly stand! My missus thought the Stewards were a bit harsh, but one of the guys had tried to climb over the barrier onto the pitch so pushed it a little too far. And their mates didn't complain....which is always a good indication of fairness  .

Oh, and the gig itself? The Boss was AWESOME!! Spoke to some West Brom fans, in the Gunners Pub later that night, who had been to see him a number of times and they thought this was up their with the best of them! They also thought the stadium was brilliant - which made me feel soooo proud :barscarf: :barscarf: !!

Concert finished at 10.35pm - 2 hours 50 mins for a 58 year old. Not bad.... :barscarf: :barscarf: !!

Anyway.....here is Born to Run just to give you a taster:

I'll post a couple of smaller clips later, which show a bit more of the stadium/crowd.

Yep ! Must say I enjoyed it. The stands do look that much more remote when you are at pitch level. The tops of the upper tiers could almost be another country ! :?

I was wondering if it was going to be full but it clearly was. Must have been close to 60,000 with those standing taken into account.

So the take should have been comparable to a match - £3 million plus.

Be interesting to know how much the club makes out of it. Doubtless a tidy amount.

Springsteen certainly put his all into it.

I wondered at first why they didn't let more onto the pitch - but I guess they are limited to 60,000 capacity as this is the approved safety limit for the ground.

I think drink sales alone must have been close to £3m..... !

I thought the Emirates was a non-smoking stadium? So it's okay for gig audiences to smoke, but not for Arsenal fans? :? :banghead: Why would that be? Do they consider gig-goers more mature and trustworthy than football fans? Do they smoke something different from us? :banghead:  It's a fecking disgrace!!  :censored:

(You wouldn't know I was a smoker from this post, would you?) 8)

When outside I thaught it was so strange going to the stadium, not to see a football match.

We got there at about 1:45 and started queing. They marked your hands when you went in the que and I was 1017th and apparently they were letting about 1600 into the front pit.

I've been to loads of gigs and concerts, seen loads of big acts and that was probably the best gig I've ever been to. Got pretty much right down to the front, the boss pointed and made eye contact with me which was a fantastic feeling during The Promised Land. The Boss standing over you was incredible. could see the whites of his eyes and the grey of his hair!

And how amazing was when it ran Badlands-Thunder Road-Born To Run....the greatest ever feeling I've ever had at The Grove, probably the best gig I've ever been to, God Bless Bruce Springsteen!

For your benefit Hleby - the smoking ban remained the rule, they just could not enforce it ! It's easy to police when people sit down.

Rather harder when they are standing up milling around and in some cases packed in like sardines in the old days on the North Bank at Highbury.

Cheers Rob. We know what to do now: at the next home game we should all stand up, and those of us that want a smoke should get their spliffs...er.. ciggies out and just start puffing. 8) Let's see if the stewards try and do something about it!!

From what I could see - from pitch level - many were actually dancing. Can't do that sitting down 8)

It was better than Henry's last minute header against the Mancs marginally!
