THE WENGER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Has Wenger left Arsenal in better shape than Fergie left Man Utd when he eventually left?

I would say the next manager has a better chance than Moyes had. For a start 6 key players left/ retired with Fergie. They were champions, and the only way is down from there. The squad Moyes was left with had a lot less quality than ours does.

I'd say Wenger has left the club at its lowest point for 23 years, with a squad that needs proper coaching and defensively organising. We do have top4, league challenging potential, just Wenger couldn't do it anymore. But he's left it set up for next man to be successful.
Get your tin hat on mate! The usual suspects will totally misread that post as "Wenger was better than Fergie"!!

I agree with you though to a certain extent. I don't think Wenger left behind a better team by design though as he hadn't a clue what he was doing for the last decade really. But Rednose left Moyes a horror show and Moyes never had a chance. If our new manager has some pragmatism and tactical nous (Simeone or Allegri or even Ancelotti) then there is the guts of a decent team there tbh.

There is an argument to support the suggestion that wenker has left better players (although it is debatable tbh), but in no way has he left a better team - we have accumulation of players that are suited to the no.10 position (ozil, wilshere, ramsey) but no player for the CDM position. He has left a team behind that is nowhere good enough at keeper or centre back spots, a left back spot that is being filled by a 32 year old, and a young(ish) right back that is declining at lightening speed.
Of course a lot of the problem is that (a) our recruitment is at best scatter gun (b) we play a system that doesnt suit the players we have - whether any manager can fix all that is debatable, but at least some organisation will make them better

Wenger has bequeathed his successor very few players that might conceivably form the basis of a successful team. I would say there are no more than three bankers: Aubamayang (who he didn't want by all accounts), Lacazette, possibly and I would say Aaron Ramsey.

Ozil? Not sure he is ever going to perform in enough of the big games. Bellerin? Totally ruined. Monreal? Has had a decent season, especially in the opposition penalty area, but in a truly great squad he would be a good cover option and no more. Wilshere? Had a purple patch mid-season, but not sure he could be relied on to stay fit or perform consistently.

Whoever takes over will need to completely overhaul this squad.

I wouldn't be surprised if SSN show the presentation live.. also because of Huddersfield's league position it is very likely that the last game at Huddersfield will be live...
Read a story somewhere that there may be a "thank you Arsene " plane flying over Huddersfield that day..

If it were I would watch the game but not all the crap that goes with it. If it's on SSN I will ignore it.

As for a plane over Huddersfield , no doubt Untold are having a crowdfunded campaign . maybe I will take a look , or not.

In THAT case we need to use the last of the Wenger Out funds to hire a plane saying "THANK THE FUCKK HE'S GOING" OR A pLANE TO SHOOT THE OTHER PRO-WENGER PLANE DOWN... simples.
