The ONLY World Cup thread (merged)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Saw the interview with Kane yesterday. I've never actually heard him speak before. I thought it was all a meme about him being a bit simple. Jeez it's so true it's no funny. Hes very special clearly.

I don't think anyone has actually seen him ''speak.'' :barscarf:

Heard he's already claimed the WC golden boot.

its so stupid to say 'we can win it' every time.

English players are always so overconfident its untrue.

He doesn't believe they can win it. The problem is if he says anything remotely realistic, he will be accused of being negative and not having any faith in the team. Then he gets slaughtered by the press and social media - he's still rightly getting a kicking for the goal claim incident. The only answer that he can give is 'we can win it'. It's the media looking for an easy story just in case he has a moment of hesitation rather than trot out the usual bull.

SteveO’s already getting his World Cup 2018 winners tshirts printed!

To be fair there’s no answer to that question that doesn’t leave him open to criticism.

they just have to say that we've underperformed at previous tournaments, so we'd be considered outsiders but we're going there to compete.

but if he admits that, you'll have the usual suspects and neutral commenters asking "was it an underachievement"? or, "aren't england just shite"? you can't really win when you are and england player (you know what i mean  ) i don't think there is any harm in saying "we CAN win it", of course we can win it, but 25 or so other teams can too, people get weird when anyone is remotely positive about england.

we'll most likely qualify 2nd in the group, and get knocked out by the first remotely good team we face, but that will be better than 50% of the other sides in the competition :barscarf:

yeah, a losing quarter final would be seen as progress.

still, at least we are not Italy, Holland or Chile. fortunately we had a piss poor group.

This has to be the worst English squad to go to a World Cup in my lifetime, and possibly the worst manager. Ok the wally with the brolly is probably more of a joker.

Not a patch on 1990 and 96, when we had flair and guts in the team. I still don’t know how we didn’t win Euro 96.
